I listened to this tape. It appears to be incomplete as it ends
abruptly in the middle of a discussion of the Chess Life printing contract. Some points of interest. The USCF lost another $300k in the first quarter (June, July and August) of the new year. The staff cuts (which had not taken effect yet) should save about $360k annually. Another $150k in annual savings (such as not printing thousands of unnneeded copies of Chess Life every month) have been made. Nothing was decided about B&E. B&E sales were down in the first quarter. Currently over half the calls to the 800 number are being abandoned (ie the caller hangs up after an average of 5 minutes on hold), some 800 calls a week. The web store has been brought back in house, it had not been updated since last Christmas. It seems likely B&E is continuing to lose large amounts of money but the board is hoping for a miracle and unwilling to close B&E down. Someone wanted to ask the Chess Trust to pay the difference between the blind and prision membership rates and the full adult rate. Schutt (I believe) objected (corrrectly in my opinion) on the grounds that it was unreasonable to ask for more than the USCF's actual costs for these members. The board was bad about identifying who voted yes and who voted no on motions for the tape. The previous board did a better job in this respect. There also was extreme background noise in spots. James B. Shearer wrote: I listened to this tape. Lucky you... I have yet to succeed in that task. I have finally downloaded Dssplayer lite but one must first download the file and save it for it to play it. When I click on the hyperlink it just throws a million characters on the page and when I try to save it it offers toonly save it as text. Is there a trick here?! Anyone? Maybe in the future it can be offered as a Windows Media compatible file. Most people would have it and it can be played directly instead of having to be saved. Sam, you'll need to create an cable interface between your tape player and
your computer. Chances are you'll need to buy a third-party box to do this. .. Then you use software to make the conversion, a package like Total Recorder. http://www.highcriteria.com/ I strongly suggest you DON'T convert to Real Player format...that proprietary product is riddled with scumware. Convert to mp3 instead, it's smaller, faster, and everyone can play it regardless of platform. TMB |

This is a lift from Total Recorder's site. I'm not convinced that their
cable idea (using the headphone jack of your tape player) will produce a quality transfer, but it's a start. The transfer of recordings from tapes, records or other media, to CD is a two step process. The first step is to get the recording to a PC file in a format the PC understands. The second step is to copy the PC file to a CD. Our software, either Total Recorder or Dictation Buddy, will address the first step. You will also need a cable with audio jacks at both ends. This cable will go from the headphone/earphone jack of your stereo or cassette player to the mic or line-in jack of your computer's sound card. You should be able to get such a cable for a few dollars from Radio Shack or other similar store. Make sure you get jacks that fit at both ends! Once you have the cable, use Total Recorder or Dictation Buddy to record from the stereo/cassette player to the PC. If you have Total Recorder go to "Recording Source and Parameters" and change the setting from "Software" to "Sound Board". You will then be able to record whatever is played into the mic or line-in jack from the output of the stereo/cassette player. Our programs will record into a WAV file. WAV files are the industry standard for PC based audio recordings. |
