A lot if folks wonder what will become of adult OTB chess. Here's one
thing to think about. One way or another, it will take money to turn it around and drive it forward. A Mensa type treatment would cost Chess HQ money in the form of a transfer of capital to the basic market level. A cut in dues might cost Chess HQ as much or more that a Mensa treatment. Or, we can hope that traditional individual "chess capitalist" promoters will assume more personal risk in an open market (for adult chess) that offers them little or no profitable return in most cases and most places. You can be assured that under present circumstances individual promoters will not drive adult chess very strongly or very far. The overall operating situation now is far different from the 1960's and 1970's. RSHaas |

Isn't Mensa currently tottering on the brink of financial ruin? "RSHaas" wrote in message ... A lot if folks wonder what will become of adult OTB chess. Here's one thing to think about. (Tom Klem) ========= I don't know. I'll try to find out. But that wouldn't change my view that a national chess federation could make good use of certain aspects of the Mensa structure. If we can't have something akin to a Mensa treatment, we don't need to send Chess HQ anything close to $49 for a membership. $15 just to be on the ratings database would interest me. That would benefit the sub-national entities such as organizers, clubs, states, etc. RSHaas |

Rich, don't feel inhibited. We're very eager to learn how the Mensa model can save USCF. Please post on this subject. Don't hold anything back from us. Of course, a cut in dues greater than $10/$5 per adult/youth would cost
Chess HQ more than the Mensa treatment I favor. One way or the other, the revitalization of adult chess will cost HQ considerable money. It is a fair guess that Chess HQ will make no such investment or concession. In time organized adult rated chess will become just a New York area thing.. maybe with Chicago and Los Angeles hanging a while, too. Of course, to those guys that is "national" enough and the rest of the country doesn't matter.. and never did matter. RSHaas |

RSHaas Actually it won't cost them anything, because they're not going to do it, it is never going to happen and USCF will soon be gone. Best Regards, Bruce |

Puh-lease!! Isn't Mensa currently tottering on the brink of financial ruin? ______________________________________ No, in all fairness, Mensa it is not on the "brink of financial ruin," at least not in the U.S. Although American Mensa is projecting a deficit for this year, it is more than offset by several consecutive years of surplus. It is still financially strong, at least according to its published financials. KidDon |
