Default Chess and Education Journal Article

The January 2004 edition of "Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School," a
journal published by the National Council of Teachers of Mathemantics
(www.nctm.org), includes a four-page article entitled "The Chess and
Mathematics Connection: More Than Just a Game," by Robert M. Berkman, a
mathematics educator in NYC. Reprints are available from the publisher.

The article cites some of the research that has been published in the past
decade or so, including: Ferguson (1995), Liptrap (1998), and Margulies
(1991, 1999). It provides several exercises for connecting math concepts
with chess, and a set of chess rules, which is incomplete (no en passant,
failure to identify that pawns cannot capture straight ahead, failure to
identify that capturing a checking piece relieves check, failure to identify
draws other than stalemate.)

The article is not a research piece, but is written for practicing teachers.
The journal is a professional journal rather than an academic research
journal.

No mention of USCF other than as publisher of Ferguson.
