Very interesting interview, Tomic. Where was it published?
One of your questions "Why didn't Fischer stay in Budapest?" is perhaps answered by Eugeny Bebchuck. And two years back, having learned that Hungary enters NATO, Fischer told Liliental: " I need to run, they will get me... "And soon he disappeared and made phone calls to his friends from... Japan: "Only here I can be rescued from their prosecutions ". He didn't give them his phone numbers but promised "to call frequently". See http://www.dmv.demon.nl/Bebchuck.htm Peter van der Hoog "tomic" wrote in message ... Interview with Susan Polgar Dear Susan, I would like to make a short interview about some themes: Goran Tomic: Do you think you and your sisters gained more or lost more by not having a typical childhood instead of one where everything was secondary to chess? Susan Polgar: Not more, not less, just different. Chess helped me in life and I would not want to trade this experience. It may not work with others. We also did a lot more than just chess. We also played other sports and we took our general study very seriously. Our education was a lot more advanced than kids our ages growing up. G.T: You, or perhaps your parents, insisted at one time on playing only in men's competition. What changed your mind? What do you think of the division of sexes in chess competition? Susan Polgar: I played against older girls when I was younger. I won the Budapest Championship for girls under 11 when I was 4 with a perfect 10-0 score. Then I competed against men only for a long time. The idea behind that was to improve my chess strength. It is the same in other sports. For example, tennis players such as the Williams sisters, Lindsay Davenport, Jennifer Capriati and many others practice against men. I believe there should be tournaments for women, men and mixed. G.T: In the recent interviews many facts were written about US Women's Olympiad program. Who are the sponsors of the US Women's Olympiad program? How could you aggregate woman chess players from different countries, from Ukraine, Hungary, Georgia, Armenia? If your team wins a gold medal on Women's Olympiad 2004, will it have a big influence in chess development among young people in the USA? Susan Polgar: The program currently has sponsors such as the Kasparov Chess Foundation, the Susan Polgar Foundation, IBM, ChessBase, the US Chess Trust, the USCF, and International Chess Marketing, etc. We also have assistance in different forms from various individuals. But it is not enough. Some other countries have programs to help their players. Our members have to work full time to make a living. It is a very big disadvantage. G.T: Would you comment some facts I have read in some internet articles: ------------ "I had very good results against Bobby. But the final score is something I would never reveal unless Bobby consents. Trust is something that is very important to him." GM Susan Polgar, March 05, 2003 She has quite a different opinion about Fischer then Sofia, her younger sister. Sofia wished she never had met Fischer, Susan on the other hand has very good memories of Fischer: "He was very nice to me and my family". Fischer did, and was welcomed as a guest in the Polgar household. He appears to have behaved himself. "I remember happy times in the kitchen cutting mushrooms," Susan says. "He's very normal in that sense, very pleasant." Although Fischer refused to play classic chess, he graciously helped the Polgar sisters with their games. When he wasn't sharing his expert analysis with them, he was playing FRC games against them. He was astounded at how accomplished the sisters were. Seeing that he was impressed by the Polgars' play, a friend of Fischer's suggested a publicized match to promote FRC. Fischer agreed. "I first met Bobby with my family," Susan recalls. "I told him rather than spending the rest of his life hiding ... he should move to Budapest, where there are a lot of chess players." ------------- What's your opinion about Bobby Fischer? Why didn't Fischer stay in Budapest? Bobby Fischer said that some of the top WCC matches in man competition were prearranged move by move. What do you think about it? Susan Polgar: Bobby is one of the greatest chess players of all time. He is ranked up there with Kasparov and Capablanca. I am not sure why he left Budapest. It may or may not be. I do not have any first hand knowledge of that. Unless someone can offer concrete evidence, I will leave it as a rumor. G.T: I have read your opinion about internet and its importance in development of chess players, like Radjabov, Nakamura etc. Do you play on internet? On which site? Susan Polgar: Internet is one of the greatest assets for chess players. We used to receive games very slowly. Now, games are being broadcast live. It is truly amazing. Internet chess servers are also a fantastic tool for players to play at their convenience to stay sharp. Because of this, you will see younger and younger grandmasters and champions. It can help players improve a great deal. I have played on PlayChess.com, ICC, WCN and USCL. Each of these servers has its own strength and weaknesses. But that is a completely different subject. G.T: What do you think about internet tournaments? Recently Emil Sutovsky become European Internet Champion. Many grandmasters took part in that competition like Grandmasters Michael Adams, Teimour Radjabov, Viorel Bologan, Loek van Wely, John Nunn, Etienne Bacrot. Could these matches replace classical tournaments? What do you think about "Distance matches" (like -Paris Petersburg Distance match?) Susan Polgar: I think Internet tournaments will become very popular. Soon, you may see official leagues / matches between cities, countries and continents. However, better marketing has to be done. G.T: What do you think about man-machine matches. Many people predicted that the last match Kasparov-X3D Fritz will end in a tie like all other matches Kramnik-machine or Kasparov-machine. Is there a really interest in man-machine match which always ends in a tie? Susan Polgar: I think it is great. There are a lot of interests so far. I have been lobbying for woman versus machine since the IBM Deep Blue against Garry Kasparov match in 1997. After I won my 4th World Championship in 1996, I challenged Deep Blue. I have been lobbying for woman versus machine matches. I hope it can become a reality in the near future. G.T: What do you think about FIDE and its President, Kirsan IIyumzhinov? Is there an alternative FIDE? What do you think about Association of Chess Professionals ( http://www.chess-players.org )? Susan Polgar: FIDE and USCF are in the same boat. No alternative federation will work unless you eliminate the politicians and put in real business / marketing people to help this game. I have a lot more faith in my business manager and my management team than any chess politician out there. They are proven winners in business and they have no political agenda. I am looking forward to a very big 2004. There will be a lot of updates on my site www.SusanPolgar.com and www.USScholasticChess.org. Happy Holidays and Best wishes to everyone! Goran Tomic: Thanks for the answers. Best wishes and Happy New Year! |

He didn't give them his phone numbers but promised "to call frequently". Fischer was guitly of nothing in going to Yugosalvia to play professional chess. An American's citizens right to travel and engage in legitamate business should not be dependent on State Department approval unless we are formally at war with a country. Here's a strange concept in the USA of 2003: The Rights of the Citizens come before the Games of the Bureacrites. France had no problem with Spasski cashing his check. We could learn a lot from the French. |

What do think of one of Susan Polgar's answers: "Unless someone can offer
concrete evidence, I will leave it as a rumor." How much evidence does she need? On Fischer's own website he writes: "In January 2000 I left Budapest for Japan where I have spent most of my time for the past 3 years". The fact that Fischer left Budapest isn't controversial at all and I'm sure the chess community in Budapest is aware Fischer left the country. Is she playing dumb? "tomic" wrote in message ... To compare Bebchuck with Sam Sloan is very serious, Todd. Character
assassination is one of RGCP's darker pursuits and we should stay far from it. Before I accept such an outrageous ordeal I'd like to get some more opinions about Bebchuck. Yes, he cooked up the story but part of his story is genuine and true. Susan answer "Todd E. Flambers" wrote in message om... Very interesting interview, Tomic. Where was it published? To compare Bebchuck with Sam Sloan is very serious, Todd. Don't you see any likeness between those two characters, Peter? Why not compare them both with each other? Character assassination is one of RGCP's darker pursuits and we should stay far from it. It was a metaphor and not character assassination. Since when has it been forbidden to use metaphors in the messages? Without metaphors our language will be poor and boring, you know. Before I accept such an outrageous ordeal I'd like to get some more opinions about Bebchuck. Yes, he cooked up the story but part of his story is genuine and true. As well as Sloan. |

Perhaps what was intended was something like this: Goran Tomic: What's your opinion about Bobby Fischer? Susan Polgar: Bobby is one of the greatest chess players of all time.
