Default Anand reveals real full name in interview

(Miriling) writes:
If, in the interview, he says his name is Anand Vishwanathan, is he
saying in effect that he is Anand, son of Vishwanathan?

Yes.

And if he has only one name, shouldn't he be identified in the chess
world, by FIDE and others as simply Anand? Nothing more, nothing
less. Isn't it time to get rid of "Vishy"?

Vishy is a nickname that other chessplayers gave him. He's ok with it.

Do you suppose if we all chipped in we could buy Jerry a new sig? It becomes
difficult to treat postings on genteel matters of taste seriously when they
continue to appear under a header that insinuates the US President is a nazi,
and that makes the poster look like an effin' moron (MO ron).

As a "joke", the insistence on Weinstein is in abominable (humorous) taste.

Same with Chinese names also - I belive Japanese switched their
"official" names to the "Western" standard.

Dear Mr. Fernandez,

As far as I can tell, your statement might show some misunderstanding.

In Japanese publications, a Japanese name is written with the family name
preceding the given name (e.g. 'Kurosawa Akira').
In most (though not all) Western publications, a Japanese name is written
with the given name preceding the family name (e.g. 'Akira Kurosawa').

According to your cited article (elsewhere in this thread), Japan's Council
on National Language has been considering requesting that all Western
publications henceforth should conform to the Japanese convention of writing
Japanese names with the family name preceding the given name (e.g. 'Kurosawa
Akira' should become the accepted usage everywhere). That convention already
has been observed by some Western academic publications in writing Japanese
names.

I wonder, if we begin to invert Japanese and Chinese names in
English-language publications as a regular practice, in accordance with the
usage in those languages, whether we'll begin to do the same with Hungarian
names, e.g. Acs Peter, Polgar Judit, Maroczy Geza, etc., where the Western
European usage has been established in English for considerably longer than
it has for East Asian names.

Croxen,

Heil Dubya!

I DON'T "insinuate" that "the US President is a nazi" (sic). I state in so
many words that he and every member of his government, as well as most citizens
of his state -- is a fascist. I merely use the Nazi slogans and language, to
stress this position and because I believe that many persons today either
remember the events of the 1930s and 1940s or UNDERSTAND that part of the
history of Europe.

Obviously, you, a denizen of Harvard University, cannot conceive of humanity or
of human history. But that would be your problem, if you tried to attain to
humanity, despite the Harvard handicap. It certainly is not mine.
