In round 3 all games were drawn except Svidler - Bareev 1-0
The next round: Round 4 Wednesday January 14 Adams - Zhong Bareev - Shirov Kramnik - Svidler Anand - Bologan Timman - Van Wely Topalov - Akopian Sokolov - Leko Watch live at www.coruschess.com or with Petersburg GM commentary at www.ruschess.com Bulletin, by Phil Innes Of course, Kramnik - Svidler will be the big game and Peter S has scored the biggest ElO from a Swiss this year (2835 to win the Russian championship) and will evidently continue to challenge the world's top players; but the biggest fireworks may come from Bareev versus the 'romantic' Shirov who previously played a highly complex Sveshnikov line to draw against Adams. Timman vs van Wely may be over-practiced, so perhaps one of them will offer a surprise? Zhong has shown well to-date, and if he can survive Adams with the white bits should feel good about his performance in this company. Leko seems to want to find ways to win with both white and black pieces, and Anand-Bologan might be a fascinating positional sturggle - who has played his pawns better than the sometimes breathtaking Gospodin Bologan during 2003? Phil, common courtesy would require you not to include the 'filth' rgcp grupp in any rgcm posting, at least on planet 'michael adams' it would. Have I ever been the major shareholder in a 'beeza' bantum 150cc 'scrambler' with a big-end that was just about to fall away, you might conceivably behove yourself to enquire of my person? & of course the answer is yes. I'm sorry to see you taking this tack Phil, my trivial criticism of your use of the concept 'cordial' & it's variations (entente?) is a personal dillopeck, a 'filla dilla' in effect. Zhang appeared to have copious opportunities to grasp the draw, but played too passively. Kramnik can conjure wins out of the smallest of edges. It's clear that Bologan will not have a reprise of his Dortmund success; Topalov play featured some witty tactics. Weird play by Shirov against Anand. WaZ has the makings of a disaster for him, unless he can find his Caissianic muse.... Timman looked set to upset Svidler, but then his edge seemed to evaporate |

Isidor,
I was watching too - and also reading a Russian GM's comments as it went along. To your comments I only add that you didn't mention Adams play against the Tarrash, and that final shot! [In Timman - Svidler, GM Ivanov, who has very good English, coined a term and mentioned that Timman had chosen a 'ferroconcrete' Anti-Grunfeld] Results of today's games we Kramnik - Zhong 1-0 Sokolov - van Wely 1/2 Topalov - Bologan 1-0 Anand - Shirov 1-0 Timman - Svidler 1/2 Leko - Akopian 1/2 Adams - Bareev 1-0 Here are standings: Round 6 Standings: 1 Topalov 4.0 2 Anand 4.0 3 Adams 4.0 4 Kramnik 4.0 5 Leko 3.5 6 Akopian 3.0 7 Van Wely 3.0 8 Svidler 3.0 9 Sokolov 2.5 10 Timman 2.5 11 Bareev 2.5 12 Shirov 2.0 13 Bologan 2.0 14 Zhang Zhong 2.0 and here are tomorrows games:- Round 7 January 18 Akopian - Adams Van Wely - Leko Bologan - Sokolov Svidler - Topalov Shirov - Timman Zhong - Anand Bareev - Kramnik and I risk my neck with predictions:- yikes Akopian - Adams 0-1 Van Wely - Leko 1/2 Bologan - Sokolov 1/2 Svidler - Topalov 1-0 Shirov - Timman 1-0 Zhong - Anand 0-1 Bareev - Kramnik 1/2 Cordially, Phil Hmmmm....another instructive punishment of Bareev's French Defense.
