Someone else makes that point.

Why pay for the production of an expensive magazine that I don't care about?

I actually agree with you. It would save so much. Yes, you'd alienate
some, but you have to do that in this age. If Microsoft waited until
everyone were ready, they'd be bankrupt.

One advantage of going e-zine is that HQ could get the adult membership cost
down to $20 - $25. Then a $10 Mensa treatment could be added on to create the
most ideal form for a national chess federation.
We won't have a really good chess federation until it has adopted the Mensa
model and adapted it to serve the chess mission.

e-zine chess magazines, do you read the ones that are available now? I don't
think that is the way to go.

Heh, Trying to convince some of these techophiles on here that the printed
page is better than a ezine is like trying to convince school administrators
to stop the use of calculators in grade schools. As far as the idea of
saving a lousy twenty bucks...gimme a break I can't believe that a person
watches thier money that close that they don't pee that much away on
something frivilous in six months.

I'm not in the US, however in Australia I like to receive the local Chess
association newsletter in hard copy.

I find anything other than short sharp commentary to be unreadable on the
web, and has anyone out there actually read a whole ebook or e-zine?

What better way to relax than to grab the hard copy and sit down, or lie
down and read it. The best place to read is on the john, and unless you
have a wireless PDA, this isn't practical.

The other alternative that I can think of is to use an Avantgo type model,
in which you can receive the information for viewing on a PDA etc. I have
used this for Wired magazine and some News content, so maybe they could send
this out to you, or a PDF document.

I agree with Curt, there is no good substitute for printed matter right now,
and you would spend that much on a McDonalds meal and not even blink.

What you don't say is that you will join if CL becomes an E-Zine.
Careful avoidance?

I'd join the next day, especially if they threw in a chess server as part of
the deal.

This isn't rocket science:

1. Automate the rating process.

2. Make Chess Life an E-Zine

3. Set up e-book store where they sell to their mailing list and get 50
percent of the revenue, giving the other 50 percent to the authors.

4. Reduce dues to $19.95 a year and put out a lot of free content (to sell
stuff to the traffic). Dues could be eliminated in 5-10 years as
advertising/partner revenue increases.

5. Turn USCF into a for-profit venture so it can capitalize.

6. Threaten bankruptcy to anyone who doesn't like the new plan.
