p.s. The Florida Chess Association and the Florida Scholastic Chess
League joint scholastic championship ("SuperStates") drew nearly 725
scholastic and junior players to Lakeland last weekend. Hopefully,
this cooperative effort will continue in the future.

That is good, but still just over half of the CalChess (Norcal) Scholastics
which had 1430 this past weekend.

The King of Headcount has spoken.

What Rp forgets to mention is that CA has more than twice the population of
FL, and that they have nearly three times as many people under the age of
18. These figures are from the 2000 US Census.

True, and I think I read, recently, that not all the CalChess sections were
rated games.

Actually the California Chess Association is a mis-nomer. It is really
the Northern California Chess Association. Southern California has
another chess association. Northern California and Southern California
got divorced for chess purposes about 20 years ago.

Keep in mind that Northern California is separate from Southern California
for USCF purposes, and SCal probably has over half of that population.

Anyway, 1450 is a very good turnout, probably an all-time high for the
event. I'd be interested in totals by sections, only two of which
were unrated as I recall.

I'll also be interested in seeing how many of the participants from last
year's $1 offer came back this year.

Oh yes, Northern California only, excellent turn-out.

What Rp did mention is that CalChess is (Norcal) which means Northern
California.

Northern California has about half the population of Southern California which
would make it about the same size as Florida.

Florida has done a fine job, just not as good as the CalChess group:-)
