How Bessel Kok could have won the FIDE Presidential Election by marcus@stkittsnevischess.org
How Bessel Kok could have won the FIDE Presidential Election The better path was for Bessel Kok to LIE. Had Kok offered to help the third world in chess, that is - LIE - he would have won. One of the problems here in chess is the egotistical nature of the political leadership. Kok was too honest. Kok is Vice Chairman of a state run telecommunications monopoly in Eastern Europe. In other words,...

Joel Channing reports on the Zoning Issue by Sam Sloan
Posted: Sat May 27, 2006 2:02 am Zoning of New HQ Bldg I began researching the Crossville land deal at the annual meeting in Phoenix last August. I became concerned when I read a note in the financial report that said that, in the event of a sale of the building, the City has the right to buy back the land for one dollar. When I raised this as a question at one of the sessions I was...

Conflict between Afghan Delegations to the World Chess Federation by Sam Sloan
Conflict between Afghan Delegations to the World Chess Federation. There is a Congress of the World Chess Federation going on right now in Turin, Italy in the same sporting facility that housed the Winter Olympic Games a few months ago. There are two slates running for the presidency. One slate is known as The Good Guys. The other slate is known as The Bad Guys. Both the Good Guys and the Bad...

Newsgroup Censorship by Rob Mitchell by Sam Sloan
Newsgroup Censorship by Rob Mitchell Rob Mitchell, a regular poster to the chess newsgroups, especially rec.games.chess.politics , has come up with an interesting way to thwart discussion of any topics he finds objectionable: He changes the subject headers, so that anybody who has been following the discussion will not be able to see what happened to it. At first I thought it was happenstance...

Lost Tal Game Discovered by Equinorm@AOL.com
I am in the process of moving, and in readying for the move I have been going through some old boxes that have been stored away. In one of the boxes (filled mostly with old Chess Life magazines) I found a scoresheet with the following game (which I thought I had lost forever): Mikhail Tal - Geofrey Strayer Software Toolworks, 26.11.1987

Kasparov makes surpise chess conference in Greece by Chess One
See http://www.rightmove06.org/index.php?set_language=en&cccpage=articleview&set_z_articles=168 Including the very cryptic comment: 2.2 What do you think of the Topalov - Kramnik match? Do you believe that it will take place eventually? When you are dealing with promises made by Kirsan Iliyumzinov* you should always be aware that after the elections they might not be materialized!

Why FIDE discriminates against black people, is Kirsan Illyumzhinov a racist? by marcus@stkittsnevischess.org
Why FIDE discriminates against black people, is Kirsan Illyumzhinov a racist? It appears that Kirsan believes that blacks can't play chess as well as white people. This is why black people from St Kitts and Nevis can't play in the world chess champshiop. Blacks are perceived as too stupid to play chess. We can't play in the world chess championship because the FIDE President is more interested...

Why Wayne Praeder is wrong about Term Limits by Sam Sloan
What Wayne Praeder proposes is exactly the opposite of what we need. What we need is a way to induce the good board members who served in the past to come back and run again. We had some excellent board members back in the late 1980s and early 1990s, men like Fred Gruenberg, John Donaldson and Jerry Hanken. When they were on the board, the USCF was profitable. It was during their terms of...

Why do chess players act so strange? by Zero
How come people who play chess act so weird and strange? I went to a tournament one time in a big hotel; people acted really strange.. I saw players who would slam the pieces down. I don't understand how slamming a piece down makes their move stronger than placing it gently. I saw one player screw the piece into the board as he placed them on their new squares.

Does Opening help the Chess Game play better? by Sanny
I would like to know if Opening is learnt by a Computer Game will it make better moves. If it is so Can anyone tell me how can I get a list of All the Major Openings. Currently the game plays without Openings: http://www.softtanks.com/chessgame/Chess.html I want that the game plays First four Moves without thinking a second and plays the best Opening moves.

Why should I play chess??? by Zero
I went to a chess club again this week. I just don't understand why some players spend time playing in tournaments, reading books, playing online, and studying positions/games, etc. What will I gain by playing chess? Will it make me more intelligent or improve my memory?? I once read that people who practice mental activities will help prevent alzheimer's disease. I think this is the disease...

A complement to orthodox chess, by Mats Winther by Mats Winther
It's time to discuss the chess rules and seriously reconsider the opening rules. Orthodox chess (Fide-chess) is today more and more revolving around computer-aided opening preparation. The game is increasingly taking place before the actual meeting at the chessboard, by the meticulous preparation against an opponent and his particular repertoire. The science of openings is becoming a heavy...
