We aren't the only ones by jamesrynd@aol.com
I have included what are only a few paragraphs from a very interesting article showing how another "arcane" activity is modifying itself to a "new" world. My perhaps anachronistic views are well-known, so others may find what is in the article very positive. It is available at the CSM website. Cricket makes a comeback in Britain

long article in 'Observer' (London) about Garry Kasparov by Tim_Gluckman
http://observer.guardian.co.uk/magazine/story/0,11913,1553046,00.html There is a comparatively long article about Garry Kasparov's political ambitions i.er. to win in the next presidential election in Russia. Personally I believe that Putin has so much control over the democratic system there that Garry has effectively little chance to defeat whoever Putin puts forward to follow him. Other...

Attack of the bots by Mike Murray
The September "Wired" details the infestation of online poker by bots, which in addition to playing with mathematical precision, can cheat by collaborating and sharing information with other bots at the same online "table". Much similarity to computer-aided cheating at online chess. Scientists at the U of Alberta are striving to create the poker version of Deep Blue. According to the article,...

A play by play on the Phoenix Delegates' Meeting would be Cool:) by Bruce
You know unfortunately, my international business dealings, high stakes casino operation, and busy love life with gorgeous beauties all kept me from attending the Delegate's meeting in Phoenix this year for USCF. :) Back in 2001, I managed to give a play by play of the important motions and decisions being made from the site. This was of course difficult given that I was often eating scrod with...

William Lombardy Wikipedia page by Sam Sloan
William Lombardy From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. William James Lombardy (born December 4, 1937) is an American Grandmaster of chess. In 1957, Lombardy became the first American to win the World Junior Chess Championship. He won the tournament with a perfect score of 11-0, the only time such a result has ever been achieved. Lombardy drew a two-game match with World Chess Champion Mikhail...

Chess Classics? by Louis Blair
During a recent visit to a magazine store, I saw a music magazine (Mojo, I think) that came with a CD called "Chess Classics". Does anyone know what that is all about?

Just so no one forgets famous predictions of a couple weeks ago. by Bruce
"This is only one of many reasons why I believe that the delegates in Phoenix will reject the contract signed by Beatriz as unauthorized and prohibited by the By-Laws and therefore invalid." Sam Sloan Hmmmm, based on Hal Terrie's report from the meetings it sounds like this was typical Sam Sloan vapor-crap.

So When the Smoke All Cleared? by Bruce
Was there a big controversy at this year's U.S. Open Delegate's meeting? Did the Delegates support the construction of the permanent building in Crossville? Did Randy Bauer kill Peter Leko or was Leko already still dead? :)LOL! Did Beatriz resign or was that just a rumor? Did we sign another contract with Games Parlor? Did Dustin Diamond receive Delegate's credentials or didn't he "Screech" loud...

Connections between Nikkin and Natrol by Sam Sloan
A big controversy in chess centers on the fact that former President of the USCF hired Bill Hall to become the new USCF Executive Director at just about the same time that Beatriz Marinello endorsed Natrol as a "brainspeed" drug which will improve chess playing ability. Bill Hall worked for Nikkin before he was hired by the USCF. However, both Bill Hall and Beatriz Marinello have denied that Bill...

Philsy's "hiatus" - saving us all from 60 years of chess matches by The Historian
The anonymouse Chess One (probably Phil Innes) wrote: "what nonsense - what lies! I recently achieved bringing 2 nations together to play against each other after a hiatus of 60 years" The two nations are the USA and Russia. Let's see how many times the US and Russia/USSR have played each other during Innes' "hiatus" (1945-2005). I'm leaving out individual tournament encounters between US and...

No too bad, isn't it? by jamesrynd@aol.com
Everytime Goran calls Brennen or Kingston "thieves," I get this mental image of him as Sylvester the Cat, feathers protruding from his mouth, pointing at the innocent dog. Oh, and it is 4991 normal people.

FIDE norm question by politikalhack@gmail.com
Please don't answer unless you have the credentials to do so authoritatively--we need something we can rely on.... This is rather time-sensitive. 10 round tnmt, double-round robin with 3 GMs (of whom two foreign nationals) & 3 IMs (of whom at least one foreign national). Does the FIDE prohibition against "individual single matches" disallow this format for norm purposes?
