Where is Liberty? by
Parrthenon
Joel Benjamin asks a good question. Where is Liberty? And some of us,
given Bush's horrors, wonder where is liberty.
The real issue, however, is where is the cross that four USCF members
have given us to bear. Where is Crossville?
Oh, yes, I know it is in Tennessee. Tennessee may be narrow, but it's
hundreds of miles long.
Where is the cross that chess will have to bear?

Hate Speech? by
BarbaraVilliers
My Grandfather was German Jewish. A few of my relations died in the
holocaust. However I do not find disputing the number of Jewish people
murdered by the Nazi's to be offensive or hateful.
Five million or six million people tortured, the deed was still
horrific.
Actually Stalin and his communists outdid Hitler in massacring the
Jews and prior to that many of them were killed in Spain by...

Paging Grant Perks! by

FASTEN YOUR SEATBELTS
The current building will be sufficient for the USCF's current needs.
While I believe that publications will end up in Crossville, if it
didn't the building would be more than sufficient. We are not planning
on adding a second building, but it makes sense to design a structure
(and we did) that allows for future expansion...Middle men? You mean

Statementgate by

Personally, I thought it was ****ty that they kept it out. -- Eric

Concerning the quashing of Sam Sloan's candidate's statement in
Chess Life, I have knowledge of what happened within the office and
Board. Sam's statement would never have appeared under any
circumstances. My knowledge is hearsay, but it could be taken in
deposition, I believe, if there is a...

What really happened by

SLOAN VS. BAUER
What really happened to my candidate's statement, which has now been
confirmed from two independent sources, is that my statement was not
late. It was in production in Chess Life Magazine, until Beatriz
Marinello ordered the Chess Life staff to remove it from the magazine.
The claim that it arrived late was just a cover story to conceal what
really happened. Sam Sloan

Steve Schutt Kicked My Ass..... by
Ray Gordon
.....well, my team's ass.
I took this little school that had never had a chess coach and was 0-3 in
the city league to finish with a 5-5 record, ending their last two matches
against Washington with a 9-1 score and a bunch of miniatures.
On the way there, however, they had to play Masterman, coached by Mr.
Schutt.

Scholastics: Neil is Right by
ron_suarez_chess@yahoo.com
I decided to start a new thread to give Neil's phrasing better
attention.
His statement from another thread is:
" No, most, if not all, of them are going to be gone in a year or two,
unless they play in mixed tournaments and clubs with adults. Chess is
an adult activity; such scholastic tournaments promote chess as a
child's game, to be set aside when they set aside childish things."

USCF Back to Old Ways by
BrotherNehoc
Yes the USCF is back to its old ways again. It is now April 11 and I
have still not received the paper copy of the April supplement. Considering that we have already had 2
weekends go by in April this is ridiculous. It can't be a question of
address, as previous supplements have been delivered with no problem.
It can't be a question of affiliate membership as my club affiliate
dues are paid...

USCF Board -- Ethical Murk Yet Again!! by
The Masked Bishop
I swear, it's like a drug for them. Regardless of whether or not they were,
by letter of some obscure provision, entitled to drop Sam Sloan's candidate
statement, you would THINK that our feckless Board would actually try to
avoid YET ANOTHER controversy about their ethics and just get the damn thing
in the magazine.
But no!! They go to press without it! And no-one can seem to find where...

Brennan hate-speech again and again by

In a non-chess newsgroup Neil Brennan volunteered accusations that I held
anti-semitic views, to which this poster replied

I don't worry that you're a racist, Phil; if you were a racist, you
would speak only to men of your own ethnic group, and regard the rest
