Discover Magazine by
HAASpittle
I'd recommend the December issue of Discover magazine as a good read for those
interested in how ancient humans populated the earth after migrating out of
Africa some 50,000+ years ago. The cover story is "Secrets of the Y
Chromosome." Dr. Spencer Wells collected blood samples from thousands of
central Asians and analyzed them to determine how they are related to
populations elsewhere. Among...

Tournament Fees by
Rob Mitchell
LOL,
My point of view is from local tournaments. My assumptions are that
little changes from local to national events. If that is not the case
then I stand corrected.
Sorry for any confusion.

Sam Sloan appointed to succeed William Rehnquist by
Jürgen R.
William H. Rehnquist, Chief Justice of the United States Supreme
Court, is expected to resign before the end of the year. Antonin
Scalia will become the new Chief Justice since Scalia's opinions are
identical to those of President Bush, whenever the latter can be said
to have an opinion. (Judge Thomas, who always votes with Scalia, is
obviously inelegible.) It was announced this morning that...

13 issues of Chess Life? by
Miriling
Is a statement made on the page bearing the table of contents in Chess Life
misleading? Below the mission statement on that page it is written "Chess Life,
formerly Chess Life & Review, is published monthly with an additional issue in
February by the United States Chess Federation . . ."
An additional issue in February?!
When the CL editor gave his report to the delegates in August in Florida,...

Sloan vs. USCF: Amazing by
Matt Nemmers
Does anyone else find it truly amazing that somebody like Sam Sloan --
somebody who can't even manage his own life, care for his own children
(legitimate or otherwise), or hold down a steady (and legal) job, and
somebody who has been soundly thrashed for every single office for which
he's ever run, including the USCF Executive Board (numerous times) -- thinks
that HE knows how to run the United...

EB members' concerns about privacy by
Miriling
I think it was Sam Sloan who raised this issue some time ago, but I want to
repeat it. It is interesting to note that only 4 out of the 7 USCF Executive
Board members are not concerned about having their residences listed in Chess
Life. The vice president, secretary and two members-at-large have no qualms
about having their places of residence published in the magazine. The
president, vice...

TWO RED FLAGS
"There's a big difference between the complaint that the debate about
relocation hasn't gotten enough public airing, and the complaint that
significant debate hasn't taken place at all. The first complaint, if true,
_might_ indicate lack of democratic process and so on; the second, if true,
_would_ indicate gross incompetence." -- Larry Tapper
Two items simply don't pass the sniff...

USCF's biggest over-stocked item by
Miriling
It is interesting to note that the USCF still has thousands of items collecting
dust in its warehouse in New Windsor, N.Y. Among the tons of material still for
sale is the federation's biggest over-stocked item: Test, Evaluate & Improve -
the Danny Kopec/Hal Terrie book (3,495 copies) that the federation is trying to
sell at $9.59 apiece, which has a retail price of $22.59
Other over-stocked...

USCF "Type A" not- for - profit? by
Rob Mitchell
This was in some question regarding the lawsuit. This is what the USCF
website contains.
"As a not-for-profit membership organization, the USCF applies its
revenue to services and programs benefiting its members and chess in
America. The US Chess Trust, a charitable trust administered by the
USCF, supports chess programs for schools, veterans, hospitals, and
prisons worldwide."

Letter from New York Attorney General to Judge Horowitz posted by
TR
As I read the letter, there is no finding on the part of the AG that
there has been a violation. How could there be? They have only the
allegations contained in Sloan's petition.
Instead, what the AG's office is doing is informing the court that
they never received notice of the sale. The assistant AG who prepared
the letter further specifies that the notice they did not receive is
the one that...

NY Attorney General to Beatriz Marinello: Your Ass is Grass by

...
The New York Attorney General sent a copy of the pamphlet to the court
along with their recent letter, so they obviously feel that this is
relevant.
Is that why they sent the pamphlet on religious organizations also? Because
they obviously feel that this is relevant?

2005 World Open MOVED? by
Ray Gordon
Channel 10 in Philadelphia just reported that the Adam's Mark Hotel in
Philadelphia (on City Avenue) will be closing on January 30, 2005, as the
land has been purchased by a Target.
I got this report second-hand from someone who was watching it, so please
double-check it, but they say that's what they heard.

USCF Law suit by
Hans Poschmann
Sam Scores Glorious Victory
A hearing was held today in Orange County Supreme Court in Goshen New
York in Sloan vs. Marinello, 2004-7739. The USCF represented by
attorney Michael J. Matsler of Rider, Weiner & Frankel filed a
cross-motion to dismiss.
The case was argued before Judge Lawrence I.. Horowitz. At the
conclusion, the judge ordered the case adjourned for ten days until
December 10, and...

Did USCF anticipate increased legal fees in budget? by
Miriling
Did the USCF anticipate increased legal fees for fiscal year 2004-2005 when it
budgeted $100,000 in a planning budet that was passed by the Delegates in
August?
This represents an increase of $34,000 from the previous fiscal year's budget.
Unfortunately, the line item is lumped together with other professional fees,
i.e. auditing expenses.
Auditing fees should be separate from legal fees. There...

A Bestiary Eadiensis by
Parrthenon
Larry, I've never been a "constant ally" of James Eade. -- Neil Brennen
I was guilty of oxymoronic logic. I called Neil Brennen a "constant ally" of
Jim Eade even as I demonstrated that he was not! I kept the reference when
reprinting the "Bestiary Eadiensis" because it is now a document. I hereby
state that Mr. Brennen was evidently not a "constant ally" of Mr. Eade.
Inevitably, I will...
