Sam Scores Glorious Victory by
Parrthenon
Bravo, Sam!
Whatever happens, a bit of time has been bought. If all is above board, the
judge's order in no way damages the Federation. If Sam is correct that he has
won a real victory, then the money could stay in the Key Bank for a good long
time.
SAM: I beg you to stay focussed here. I am certain that this order
will be met by a Federation legal counter-offensive. The Federation's...

Pro Con Neutral by
Rob Mitchell
Dear group,
I have been trying to see who is who on this board via their postings.
It is very difficult. If you would please post your name under the
heading PRO, CON or NEUTRAL after the questions I would appreciate it.
It may also be helpful to others who are new to the board.
thanks,
Rob Mitchell

Is Beatriz Marinello having trouble because of the Patriot Act? by
GrantPerks
I do not know how the Patriot Act and the Homeland Security Act
applies, but is should be obvious that when any foreign national tries
to move large amounts of cash, in this case more than $500,000, that
alarms will go off.
Actually the sum is $10,000, and you don't have to be an alien, illegal or
otherwise, to trigger the paperwork.

Tough Tony by
Parrthenon
Nonsense. Ibid above. Tony was another one of those crackpots that gravitate
to chess. History will him place amid the Sloans, Bibulds, and Parrs that haunt
chess. -- Stan Booz
History has already placed Tony Cottell among those who insisted on saving
money that Al Lawrence and, yes, Gerry Dullea get the credit for making.
Tony was a CPA, who was the beancounter. He has since been...

Marinello and Hanke, please respond! by
eapeau
USCF President Beatriz Marinello and EB Member Tim Hanke should
respond to the accusations that they want to become full-time USCF
employees. They read and post to this site on a regular basis, are
obviously aware of the discussion, and it would be a simple matter for
them to post a statement that they will not be employed by the USCF
for at least one year from the date that they leave the...

New American Genius by
HAASpittle
Jay Greenberg, age 12.. Julliard School.. composer of music. Said by his
instructor to be the greatest composer of music in 200 years.. a new Mozart. A
New Haven orchestra recently performed one of his five symphonies. Jay wrote
it in a few hours.. including the music for each instrument.
I saw this on CBS 60 Minutes tonight.

Rules Question from National Chess Congress by
GrantPerks
You're wrong. The move was self-evident and by itself hardly turned the game
around.
So he should get away scott free just because the move is self-evident? If the
evidence points to a rule infraction deserving a penalty, then he should be
penalized no matter what the move on the board accomplished.
There is a distiction between unsolicited advise and solicited advise. If the
player had...

Movin' down South by
Miriling
From USCF Executive Board motion 05-15 (made by Tim Hanke, vice president of
finance) during the teleconference on Oct. 17:
"USCF will complete its move into the free interim office space by March 31, 2005."
When will the "free interim office space" expire?

Odd cover for December Chess Life by
Miriling
The cover of the December 2004 issue of Chess Life - due to be mailed out Nov.
29 - seems rather odd: a photo of king and queen (figurines?) on a greeting
card stating "Happy Holidays." Is that the best cover the CL editor could come
up with? Wouldn't the readership be more interested in seeing a "chess photo,"
i.e. one depicting a chess personality or personalities, action photo, etc.?
This...

USC 41 Notre Dame 10 by
ASCACHESS
Well, as predicted by just about everyone except the rocket, USC beat Notre
Dame for the third year in a row and each year with a 31 point margin.
What is strange is that USC didn't really look like they were playing well
although Leinart passed for five touchdowns and 401 yards.
I guess it could have something to do with the rain which fell hard during the
first and part of the fourth...

Amos Burn - a chess biography by
Chessdon
Pre-Review of "Amos Burn, a Chess Biography"
by Richard Forster
When I first received Amos Burn, a chess biography by Richard Forster, I was
surprised to see such an extensive work about a player whom I knew virtually
nothing about. I had occasionally seen his name show up on tournament charts
or in stories about famous tournaments or about other great players of the past
but nothing more.

Rules Question from National Chess Congress by
Chessdon
How would you rule? Is a warning to White enough or should he be
forfeited?
I would ask the player where he was and try to find witnesses to acount for it.
If I could not account for his 35 minutes, I would forfeit him. The instantly
replying when he returned is decisive and since he didn't make that move just
before he left, the only conclusion is that he cheated.

I've read that Sam Sloan hasn't served the defendents in Sloan v.

dropping his lawsuit owing to the logistical burdens.

New American Genius by

From CBS 60 Minutes: Jay Greenberg, age 12, Julliard School, said by his
instructors to be the greatest naturally talented music composer in 200 years.
He's already composed five symphonies one of which he wrote in a few hours
including the music for each instrument, and which symphony was recently
performed by the New Haven Symphony.
We have a Mozart, not a Fischer.
