Females 5% of this year's U.S. Open field by Miriling
Judging by those listed as playing in this year's U.S. Open in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., it appears that approximately 5% of the participants are females. About 22 of the 434 players (who are actually playing) sport feminine first names. George Mirijanian

Ex-USCF president playing "hardball" by Miriling
It seems like former USCF president Bob Smith of Florida is making demands, threats or whatever you want to call it on the current USCF Executive Board. Smith, who resigned his presidency four years ago this month at a EB meeting in Saint Paul, Minn., has informed another former USCF president, who also resigned ignominiously from the Executive Board, that he won't be co-operating with the...

U.S. Open still not newsworthy enough by Miriling
It appears that the U.S. Open in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., which started Saturday, Aug. 7, is still not newsworthy enough to be reported in the print media, specificallyin the Sun-Sentinel newspaper, which serves Fort Lauderdale, its county and surrounding counties. The Sunday, Aug. 8 edition of the paper had absolutely not a single word about the age-old open championship, as far as one could...

August Chess Life -- more sordid objectification of women by The Masked Bishop
In a word, disgusting. Not the photo of Jennifer Shahade itself, but what it represents...a disgraceful editor's obsession with women as objects of desire. Shahade's name is not on the cover. Why should it be? That just takes away from the message, which is Pretty Face=Unstoppable. To give this woman a name might make her a person, not just an image of attractiveness. In case you missed the...

U.S. Women's Open championships by Miriling
Once upon a time there used to be U.S. Women's Open champions. According to Kenneth Harkness in the Official Chess Handbook (1967 edition, New York), "Open Championship Tournaments for women have been held irregularly in connection with the annual U.S. Open Championships. Prior to 1951, the women's tournaments were conducted as separate Round Robin contests. Thereafter, with the exception of the...

A Weather Report by JimEade
A Weather Report ;-) Concern about a reported weather crisis in Florida has caused the USCF to establish a committee of past Presidents to look into the matter. Floridians Don Schultz and Bob Smith, along with South Carolinian John McCrary were asked to give a presentation at today's delegate's meeting. Smith explained that he didn't know what was happening, but promised to get to the bottom...

Hurricane Hassie by KidDon
I think Old Hassie's hot air is fueling Hurricane Charlie and drawing it straight towards the Sarasota/Tampa area. Fully expecting he will not stop, the forecasters are predicting Charlie to be a Category 3 by the time it hits West Florida. But, if we get enough of those Mensa Metro Model $10 bills, we can rebuild. Riding the storm out in Tampa, Kiddon

Ray Gordon Saratoga Selections Friday (08/13/04) by HC
Know your newsloon. This from yesterday in another newsgroup. You be the Judge. Do I lie? Is this not the most reprehensible psycho you have ever read on Usenet? Do you *really* care who he thinks will win a horse race? Poor Ray Ray got upset because while he was professing to be an EXPERT on how to bed women, somebody pointed out that he's a loser that still lives with his MOMMY at 37. ...

Who made the US Women's Olympiad team? by Alberich
I've been away on vacation. No access to the web therefore I have no knowledge as to who made the US Women's team for the upcoming Olympiad. So I'd like to know who made the team. Obviously, Susan Polgar and Irina Krush are on there...but as to the others I'm not clear on. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

America has "chess envy" of Fischer by Ray Gordon
They always have, and they always will. Fischer actually WORKED at the game. He played sound openings, and sound chess. He studied all the time. He wasn't lazy. He was everything that our "talent" since is not, and they HATE him for it. He succeeded where all other American players fail, and they never forgave him for that. What a disgrace.

I Joined!! by HAASpittle
Boy, it is great to be back in the mainstream of chess. I joined up after a long time away from the best chess organization in the country... the ICC. Joining the USCF, however, may take a while longer. You gotta have a good reason to join the USCF... and dinky club tounaments 50 miles away in St. Pete ain't a good enough reason... not for Old Haasie anyhoo. Old Haasie
