Congratulations to the US Women's "Dream Team" for winning clear 2nd Place in the Calvia Chess Olympiad by
Isidor Gunsberg
The US Women's team earned the Silver medal, playing very solid chess.
They were the only Women's team to lose just a single match. They also
managed to defeat the Chinese team in their head-to-head match-up in
the 10th Round. In the final round, the US Women dominated Vietnam,
2.5-0.5, which enabled them to pull ahead of the Russian Women's team
(which had the section's 2nd highest average team...

I did not proof-read it carefully enough.
True. Another erratum:
'For example, the states may not require residence in the
Congressional District nor may they require length of residence, for
example.'

DUMP Kramnik by
Angelo DePalma
Kramnik has evidently pulled out of the Prague agreement, which he signed
onto only reluctantly. I don't want to say "I told you so" but I did predict
the unification was a fantasy.
Now Krumnutz wants to dictate the terms of his next match. Specifically he
wants Pono, Anand, Kasparov, and Kasim to play a 4-person tournament to
determine his challenger.
None of these guys, with the possible...

Anybody know how far back Chess Life goes? I know Chess Review goes back to

first one.
Anybody?
I believe that Chess Life newspaper started in about 1947.

Schroeder on CL and USCF by

Five months ago I sent an article for publication “Five US Opens to the
Editor of CHESS LIFE. I enclosed a self-addressed, stamped, envelope. He did
NOT respond.
I wrote the Editor twice more without a response.
I then wrote to William Goichberg about this.
I sent Goichberg a story for publication: The Mind Reader.
I did not receive a response.
I wrote Goichberg again and did not receive a...

"Cherry Picking" to win Board Prizes for the Libyans by
Taylor Kingston
(Isidor Gunsberg) wrote in message ...
The Libyan Men's Chess team employed interesting tactic to strive to
garner individual honors for several of their players. This involved
having their highest rated players--Hussien Asabri (2286), and FM

Joe Tamargo is seriously ill by
Joe Tamargo
Just to set the record straight, I'm 65, and I'll be 66 on Nov. 7,
2004.
I'd like to add that nearly everything my landlady said was mistaken.
I never refused to go to the hospital. I did sign myself out of the
hospital against medical advice the week before. I had gone back to
the emergency room with a bad case of gout, and they grabbed me and
wouldn't let me leave because I had tachycardia...

'Japan to deport Bobby Fischer' (BBC) by

Graeme, the logic man, seems to have flubbed this one up.
It is mistaken to assume that simply because someone fails to criticise
myriad other things at a particular moment, he must "therefore" approve of
them.
For example, in the following game:

Kramnik-Leko disgrace by
Angelo DePalma
All sorts of crazy ideas get thrown about on how to reduce draws in
top-level chess.
I usually am against these measures because I believe the games belong to
the players. They have the most to gain or lose. However, Kramnik-Leko just
played their second consecutive GM draw. They trotted out 14 book moves (as
far as I can see they were book moves), at which point they repeated moves
three times...

Why am I always so negative by
The Masked Bishop
Some posters have rightly pointed out in this group that I am consistently
negative about the USCF. They wonder why I don't point out the good things
the USCF has accomplished, but instead resort to hyperbole and invective to
constantly criticize the USCF, its leadership, and its services.
Well, there is a reason for that. I believe that what the USCF provides its
adult members is so meager that...

Perhaps you have already planned/done this...I was curious...
There are some special reports (top X lists, top X by state, by grade by state,
etc.) that people would find useful. Are you creating the ability to pay for
and request special queries directly online?

Crossville is OK by
HAASpittle
Chess HQ will be OK in Crossville despite the desire by many that the
organization should remain in New York. Nowadays the USCF could be fully
operational from anywhere in the country.. even in the small town South.
Press on with the move and get over it if you don't like it.

FIDE skipped the Prague Unity Plan by
Hans Jørgen Lassen
The Prague Plan was like this: Kramnik against the winner of Dortmund
(turned out to be Leko), and Kasparov against Ponomariov. And then a final
with the two winners.
FIDE has skipped that plan, not Kramnik, as they have replaced Ponomariov
with Kazhim...., a somewhat weaker player. In that situation, where FIDE
does not stick to the original agreement, I see nothing wrong in Kramnik
considering...

GM Evgenij Ermenkov, now representing Palestine? by
Isidor Gunsberg
Does anybody know the story behind this? Why is he playing for
Palestine? I wouldn't think that it would be because of a big stipend,
although I suppose that it is possible. The Oil rich Gulf Arab states
have purchased a lot of sporting and chessic talent over the past few
years. Come to think of it, how come Qatar, United Arab Emirates, and
Kuwait aren't playing in the Olympiad?
