GM Evgenij Ermenkov, now representing Palestine? by
Isidor Gunsberg
Does anybody know the story behind this? Why is he playing for
Palestine? I wouldn't think that it would be because of a big stipend,
although I suppose that it is possible. The Oil rich Gulf Arab states
have purchased a lot of sporting and chessic talent over the past few
years. Come to think of it, how come Qatar, United Arab Emirates, and
Kuwait aren't playing in the Olympiad?

Schiller's Proposal: Move the USCF Headquarters to Nevada by
Sam Sloan
Schiller's Proposal: Move the USCF Headquarters to Nevada
Eric Schiller, once a respected USCF insider who was ex-communicated
for, among other things, writing his own rule book, has made an
excellent although obvious proposal: Move the USCF to Nevada.
Among the benefits which Schiller does not mention is that land in
Nevada is completely free because it has thousands of square miles of
open,...

Movie Plot Based on Chess by
HAASpittle
CHESS MOVIES I'D PAY TO SEE
"Another Fine Mess" Laurel and Hardy as two scholastic TD's.
"Tin Cup Finger" Sean Connery stars as a fund raiser for chess.
"In His Own Defense" Stan Booz plays the role of the young Petrosian, mainly
because he looks like Petrosian. Realism is enhanced by adding two Fuller
brushes simulating Petrosian's eyebrows.

Group Replies by
Carol McAnulty
We could save us all a lot of time if in replying to any message we
delete the previous message in the reply box. Yes it does take a few
seconds but it makes it so much easier to study a stream of replies.
Otherwise you have to scroll past all the old messages with each
reply. I am suprised google doesn't make this the default. It also
takes oodles less storage space for the group and makes it...

How did Kramnik get Draw Odds?? by
Sam Sloan
How did Kramnik get Draw Odds??
I am sure that many chess players are upset as I am that Kramnik was
allowed to keep his Birdbrain "World Championship" by DRAWING the
match with Leko. Leko led for most of the match, took a draw in a
position where he could have played for a win, only to lose the last
game and allow Kramnik to draw the match and keep the "world title".
I thought that draw odds...

History of the Move to Crossville by
Sam Sloan
The original Executive Board that voted to move to Crossville did so
by a 4-3 vote. Shortly thereafter, John McCrary and Frank Camaratta,
the principle proponents of the move, resigned. Tim Hanke, one of the
ones who replaced them, campaigned for election saying that he was
against the move to Crossville. Beatriz Marinello was opposed to the
move to Crossville as well. Therefore, the bidding was...

Olympiad performance ratings for USA & UK, men and women by
Sam Sloan
Thank you for posting this especially because it leads to a point I
was trying to think of a delicate way to bring up:
The two players who were most questionable and controversial for the
USA team are doing by far the worst and are dragging the team down.
Boris Gulko should have been kicked off the team and paid some money
not to go because he has been almost completely inactive. He should
have...

How does USCF prevent CHEATING? by
Ray Gordon
This is a serious issue, especially with "Pocket Fritz" on the rise.
About 15 years ago, I was playing a game against an Expert. I played the
Yugoslav against his Dragon, and when we reached a key position, he took his
bookbag with him to the bathroom, came back about seven minutes later,
reeled off six perfect moves, and won.
I see problems both with players and spectators relaying moves...

4 EB members intimidated by attorney letter by
WPraeder
Someone needs to post that attorney letter here, so that everyone
sees
how the majority of the EB really kowtowed to legal threats, thinking of the
old chess maxim that "the threat is stronger than the execution."
George,
Post Hoc speculation aside, a copy of the letter in question can be found at:

No Chance for Chess to Gain Olympic Status for the 2012 Games: by

Naturally, the Olympic fetishists will refuse to accept reality, and
will assiduously look for a silver lining.

The IOC this week sent out a 33-point questionnaire to all 28 Olympic
sports federations. The form also went to golf, rugby, squash, karate
and roller sports, which are among the 28 ``recognized'' federations

Kudos to the EB by
JimEade
I commend the USCF's EB for its progress in cleaning up the mess left by
others. Short term expense reductions were painful, but necessary. There were
also three difficult more long term goals that had to be met:
1. Sell the building
2. Outsource books and equipment
3. Relocate

Why could not you have waited two weeks?
Beatriz Marinello has now finally made statements explaining why she

now the decision has been made, there is no going back. Beatriz has
today for the first time started attacking Bill Goichberg publicly on
the Internet and twice today called for Goichberg to resign as
