Skimming Scandal --- Talking Points for Wednesday, 19 May by
Jane Adams
So what can we agree on with an eye towards cleaning up the mess, as far as
the USCF Skimming Scandal is concerned?
1) No employee was forced to wear a bag over his head while naked and
kneeling on the office floor.
2) Our leashes were made of 100% Corinthian leather
3) The cubicle locks (jail cells) don't work and we can't force the
employees to stay under house arrest
4) A tight knit group of...

USCF Executive Board meeting agenda itrem by
Miriling
Among the items on this weekend's (May 21-23) USCF Executive Board meeting in
New Windsor, N.Y., is a "meeting with the Realtor, and inspection of possible
new headquarters." That is scheduled for Saturday, May 22, 1:30 to 3 p.m.
What is the scuttlebutt on this agenda item?
Sloan, where are you?

How did I know... by

That Ken Sloan would not respond to my response to him re product sourcing?
(more to start a new thread than to bust his gonads, although IMO they do
need some busting).

Should the USCF members GET A LAWYER? by
Ray Gordon
If what is being written about here is true, and even if the USCF's story of
mismanagement is to be believed, it would appear that a class-action lawsuit
is not beyond the realm of possibility.
ANY USCF member ruled to have standing can initiate the process.

Skimming- The Likelihood of Massive USCF Fraud by

Skimming- The Likelihood of Massive USCF Fraud
Most of you should have noticed by now that I posted an internal USCF document
regarding the USCF catalogue's remainder sales. To my knowledge, this is the
first time in USCF's history that we had any documentation on their actual cost
of goods on a per item basis.
I published this document because it begins to answer questions which have
plagued...

The Tale of the USCF Pencils by
ASCACHESS
There it was.
Right in the spreadsheet, Item P982, US Chess Pencils, Cost per Unit $.20.
USCF's cost for pencils was $.20 cents.
Having purchased thousands of pencils myself over the years, that seemed just a
bit high.
So there I was in my google search.
It was desperately hard. I typed in "pencils" and up sprang,
"Personalized Pencils www.penimpressions.com As low as 0.09 cents each

The Wisdom of Kalev Pehme, our Chess Life editor (part 1) by
The Masked Bishop
From Chess Life, May, 2004, page 20:
"The erotic possibilities of chess are unrealized today, because women
rarely play the game any more in any great numbers."
(The Wisdom of Kalev Pehme is an ongoing series of verbatim quotes,
posted here and e-mailed to all USCF officials and board members,
until such a time as someone has the sanity to fire him.)

How far behind *IS* the USCF?? by
Matt Nemmers
I've sent in several tournaments to be rated and notice that the USCF seems
to be either taking their sweet time in getting them rated or are so backed
up that they can't seem to keep up. For example:
http://www.uschess.org/msa/XtblMain.php?040303155
I sent this tournament in on March 9th. They say it was received almost
three weeks later, entered a MONTH later, and rated a week after...

Russian no-show at Vinkovci, 1968 by
2sheds
Looking through an old issue of Chess Review (November 1968), it
states that the Soviets stopped their players playing at Vinkovci
(which Fischer won) "for political reasons". Anybody know what the
reasons were? Thanks.

Chess in Chicago Tribune by
Vince Hart
Chess made the front page of the Sunday Chicago Tribune yesterday.
Apparently, the University of Chicago Chess Club is not happy about
the recruiting tactics being used by UMBC and UTD.

Prominent TD reports major cheating incident at Foxwoods by
Tim Hanke
Today I and several other people received the following email from
Severine Wamala, a leading New England organizer.
Tim Hanke
This is a complaint to USCF/GOICHBERG as well as a caution to all chess
organizers.
Player allowed to play in 2004 Foxwoods open under a false name.

More Inventory Over Payments by
ASCACHESS
Remember ChesterNumetz.
Here he is again.
Note what has really happened here.
Don Schultz was in shock when he was told that the unit price to produce the
Jim Mitch collection was $30 per book and Don thought it was more like $3.
After all, Don publishes his own book and knows what publishing cost.
So, who made the profit on this one?
A net cost of $16.50 seems unbelievably high and USCF itself...

"Now, from New York to Moscow and to Jakarta, it is often said that

to it at all."

Those Mexican UFO's by
HAASpittle
By now we've all seen the video of the UFO's spotted by the Mexican air force
last March. Rumor has it the USCF has taken a great interest in them. The EB
evidently thinks they'd make wonderful kiddie trophies and would bring much
needed publicity to chess. The hard part will be coaxing one to land on the
roof at Chess HQ and then to capture it. With limited resources and an already
strained...

May Chess Life cover story...yeah, that will rope the newbies in... by
The Masked Bishop
Given that the May cover story of Chess Life continues our current
editor's fascination with stultifying mathematical analyses of arcane
chess trivia, and that such a topic, as well as the truly ugly cover
that heralds it, will not move an inch off the newsstands, can we now
DROP the pretense that "Chess Life" has any value as a retail
periodical, and save some major money in the process?
Just a...
