Change in policy in contacting USCF office? by
Miriling
Has the USCF changed its policy in how one contacts its office? The new policy,
according to what appears on the Web site, is that now one has to fill out a
form. No longer listed are the various e-mail addresses of the departments and
personnel. This change in policy looks like it will create more work for the
New Windsor office, since the messages that are sent, after forms have been
filled...

Wash. St. 28, Texas 20 USC #1 by
ASCACHESS
As Don Shennum correctly pointed out, the pro offenses of the PAC 10 teams are
proving hard to defend for the simpler teams.
Texas certainly had more talent and the better athletes, but bit the big one
against a very good Washington State team whose quarterback had not one, but
two separated shoulders.
Certain parties on this forum must be becoming increasingly nervous about their
projections...

Wizards of the Coast by
Stewart Q. Sutton
The PHB and suits at Hasbro have decided to close all the Wizards of
the Coast retail stores (WOTC made Magic - the gathering card game and
distributed Pokemon cards in the USA)
Q1: Wasn't WOTC going to pump a lot of money into chess at one time?
If so, what happened?
Q2: Does any body know of any chess groups that used the open nights
at WOTC for a place to meet?

New Rulebook by
GrantPerks
I just received copies of the 5th edition of the Rulebook. 17 page index is
impressive, although I couldn't find the first two items I wanted to research.
The only thing I find that is a negative is the glow in the dark cover that
Random House picked.
I guess, if the lights go out in the tournament hall, we can still read the
rules.

Request for Proposals (for Chess/Art Center) Rewritten (Stan B suggestion accepted) by
A1
So you say you are a chess player, a chess club, an artist, that needs some
money?
Introduction.
THINK! THINK! THINK!
Well this may be your opportunity even if you don't have a college diploma ,
as if you have experience or abilities in researching or doing things
(writing proposals, teaching, practicing your art form, or other art proper
organizational skills you can apply yourself to receive...

FIDE-CHESS mailing list by
The Horny Goat
OK Gents, I need some help.
I have twice tried to unsubscribe from this list but am still
receiving e-mail from it.
How can I unsubscribe? If the keeper of this list is reading this
please search your list for 'lcraver' @ funj.pn (ROT-13'd to keep my
address from the spammers) and delete it.
I've installed Norton Anti-Spam for other things but don't feel this

IMPORTANT: Information regarding LeModernCaveman by
Anonymous
Many people who are new to various newsgroups ask
what is up with the poster called LeModernCaveman, who also calls himself
"Ray Gordon". This often happens because of his antisocial behavior, outlandish
claims (for which he provides no evidence), general attempts to get
attention by acting out, and very high volumes of posts to multiple newsgroups.
This individual unfortunately has a long...

Thinking times in Grandmaster tournaments by
riku_simonen2@yahoo.com
I have understood that under current Fide president tournament
thinking times in Grandmaster tournaments have been shortened. In the
golden 70's and 80's times were 2.5h/40 moves, after the move limit
game was interrupted, next move was put to sealed envelope and (after
fierce private analyzing) game was continued next day in times
1h/each. That guaranteed really high quality games. Nowadays...

Why do we care about women's chess again? by
LeModernCaveman
No offense to women, but what's the big deal with having them play the game in
large numbers?
If they want to be seen as equals to men, shouldn't we respect only those women
who compete with men on equal terms?

Cal 52, VT 49 USC Number One by
ASCACHESS
Virginia Tech discovered to their great displeasure what USC found out in
September. Don't play Cal when their quarterback is hot.
Virginia Tech was generally regarded as one of the best defenses in the nation,
was scored on again and again and again and again.
Cal opened the scoring taking the opening kickoff to a 7-0 lead, but quickly
fell behind 21-7 then 28-14, but scored again just before...

Why Kramnick Pimpslaps Polgar (on the board, that is) by
LeModernCaveman
Okay, here's the deal:
Judit plays into Kramnick's strong suit, which is where he beats her. He wins
because he's the better player.
Looks like she's sharpening her game by playing into his best lines. This
gives her insight on how Kramnik likes to play the game, and will help her to
see what he sees so that she can incorporate it into her own game down the
road.

Why does Judit Polgar continue to lose to Vladimir Kramnik? by
Alberich
This post isn't meant to start any racist or sexist flame wars. This is
a chess related question to one of the curiosities ot competitive chess
playing today. As we all know, Judit Polgar has finally beaten Gary
Kasparov (albeit only rapid game match). But the real curiosity is why
she continues to lose against Kramnik.
I personally think Judit Polgar has some kind of mental block when it
comes...
