Chess Life Winter 2004 issue by
Miriling
With the publication of its Winter 2004 issue, Chess Life has once again shown
that it is still plagued by typos and factual errors. Besides the mistake
(pointed out by an eagle-eyed poster on this newsgroup) of "Nakamura Takes
Third in Pamplona" on page 7, there are a couple of typographical errors, e.g.
the photo credit on page 13, giving the well-respected former Chess Life
editor's name as...

Voting Members by
KidDon
Here we go again. The latest USCF release states in part: "Any USCF
member 16 years or older as of June 1st 2004 and living in the United
States is a Voting Member," and that ballots will be distributed in
Chess Life. It is no longer an issue for me because I am now an Adult
Regular member, but I have not seen an announcement as to how or when
the thousands of Voting Members not receiving...

High School Affiliates by
RSHaas
Anyone notice the numbers of high school affiliates Feb 2003 to Feb 2004?
1282 to 953, down a whopping 25%. That's a rate of decline worse than the
adult regulars. And one could speculate that each high school affiliate had
maybe ten kids hooked up to the fed.
Looks like a career in American chess is grade 1 learn the moves, grade 3
reach Expert, grade 6 Grandmaster, grade 8 early...

I'm going to run for USCF EB by
Randy Bauer
I'm running for the Executive Board of the United States Chess Federation,
and I would appreciate your support. This is a critical time for our
federation, and we need a board with the managerial and financial background
to make good decisions.
I currently serve as the budget director for the state of Iowa, a position I
've held for over 5 years. I supervise a staff of 20...

Sarasota tourney attracts 2000!! by
RSHaas
Sarasota hosted more than 2000 players for a major tournament this weekend.
Bridge players. But six chess players were spotted out back near the tool
shed, the largest gathering of chess player in Sarasota in more than ten years.
One of them could still remember the moves.

Tampa .. Dead Again? by
RSHaas
I just checked the Cajun Chess website to see when its second Tampa Open
was scheduled. No Tampa Open is scheduled. It seems Crespo has exchanged
Tampa for Orlando. That leaves the Tampa area with nothing. That's what you
get when you leave the fate of Tampa chess in the hands of someone from
Louisiana.
If there is one large metro area in the whole country that would benefit
most from a...

celebrity chess by
Ivan
They have celebrities playing poker on TV.
Why don't they have them playing chess as well?
or do some sort of reality show where people play chess in a tournament.
that is a novel idea since nobody has ever played in a chess tournament before.

Chicago Open --- new adult member ratesl by
The Masked Bishop
The Chicago Open is coming. And gee, what a great deal. If I were a
potential new adult member, which we nominally wish to attract, and I mail
my entry fee in before mid-March, it's only $266! That includes the
obligatory USCF membership and ICA membership.
But if I find out about the Memorial Day event (yeah, it eats up the entire
Memorial Day weekend...good call, bozos) after mid-March, well,...

Any experts on Larry Evans out there? by
2sheds
This photograph of Larry Evans playing Mark Taimanov (with Che Guevara
in the background) is stated as being from the 1966 Havana Olympiad.
I'm pretty sure it's not. I think it could be from the 1964 Capablanca
memorial tournament. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks a lot.

An Interview with IM Angelo Young by
lawilson
IM Young (Current FIDE 2400) joined me in a private chat room to have this
interview on Chess Live on 2/11/04. We both were very excited about it, and
hope that you will enjoy it. The interview was edited to make the content
flow better than it would in a chat room environment. All of his thoughts
and words are properly...

rgc[mp] laser diary. Corus. by
Wlodzimierz Holsztynski
It is only Feb 10/11 right now, but the first
great chess tournament of the year 2004 already
feels like it has happened years ago. It brought
a fine victory to Anand, who is the top **active**
player in the world these days (or months). His
results in classical chess are supported by his
domination of the active chess.
And still, the finish of the tournament made his
result a bit less shiny. He...

clearinghouses by
Douglas L Stewart
Does anyone take the USCF clearinghouses seriously anymore? Does anyone use
them? Do they work? Does the USCF think they are still used?
There are two clearinghouses in my state and neither of them have email
addresses, which is a little silly these days I think. The one for my zip
code range had bad contact information for the longest time, but it looks
like it might have finally gotten...
