Eade's Libel Charge vs. Sloan by Parrthenon
EADE'S LIBEL CHARGE: GOSPEL TRUTH OR BIG LIE? By Larry Parr Some readers have been following the Eade-Sloan libel brouhaha. Jim Eade claims that Sam Sloan libelled him in Chess Life in a candidate's statement. Moreover, Mr. Eade has often repeated this charge, referring to Mr. Sloan as "Scammie" and using other language that is either nasty hyperbole or accurate description.

Winners and Losers in the Sherzer Case by Sam Sloan
One thing for sure, Alex Sherzer now knows who his friends really are. For example, John Fernandez, who has repeatedly proclaimed himself to be a friend of Sherzer, is difinately not his friend. Fernandez was the first to blast the news of Sherzer's arrest all over the internet and has been proclaiming since day-1 that Sherzer was guilty. So, Fernandez is definitely one on the losing end of the...

Ethics Committee's Finding by JimEade
A letter from Hal Terrie (Ethics Committee Chair) dated September 25, 2003 arrived today. It informs me that the committee by a vote of 5-3 found that my complaint did not fall under their jurisdiction. My inclination is to accept their decision, although I disagree with it. I do not expect or desire that any E. C. member comment on the specifics of the complaint. I merely wish to kill two...

Drawn games should be punished with shuffle chess by Alberich
Enough with the draws. I'm getting tired of downloading oodles of games that end up being drawn. Out they go when I use my filter in CA 7.1 or SCID. But there should be a new rule enforced in chess clubs and possibly in FIDE sanctioned tournaments...any game drawn with less than 50 moves played must be thrown out and the following game must be a game960 or pure shuffle chess between the same...

Sherzer testifies in his own trial. by Bruce Draney
I am fairly surprised that Sherzer and his attornies would agree to allow him to testify in his own defense. Once he answers questions he gives up his 5th Amendment rights of self incrimination and must answer any and all prosecution questions under oath. My guess is that he must be basing his entire defense upon entrapment, because if the jury doesn't buy that excuse, his own testimony will...

Keystone dirty pool remedy by Eric Mark
Today I played in a G/40 quad. The TD announced before the start of round one that anyone who provided a time delay--capable digital clock but did not set the delay would be fined $5 if 'caught.' First time I've heard this one, but no one complained. What do you think? Someday I'll bet someone shows up there with a new funky type of digital clock on which nobody---clock owner, opponent or...

Just received September Chess Life by CJB
Opened the mailbox today and found the apparently new Chess Life. The news seemed very old then I noticed the September on the cover. I had never received the Sept issue but I wrote that off to headquarters turnover. Now I'm wondering WTF. Is everyone else receiving a November issue? At least now I know what people are referring to when they discuss the women's olympiad training. Duh. CJ the...

Dazed and Confused by NoMoreChess
.. Recently, a poster known here as "Nick the liar" has become obsessed as to my "real" identity, for the simple reason that he prefers to address my person with ad hominem attacks, rather than adress the issues on which we seem to disagree. Fine. Whatever. But I think it is important to point out a few of Nick Bourbaki's representative misadventures. Here, I will restrict myself to just one...

journalism issue (was: Crossville, TN) by Edward Bonaventure
On 04 Oct 2003 at 01:13:34 GMT, George Mirijanian scribbled: -As a journalist, Sloan performs a valuable service to those who -want to know what's going on in the USCF. It must be admitted, -however, that he at times gets his facts wrong, i.e. confused or -twisted, which is a disservice to those who want to know. But all -in all, he a good source of information about USCF goings-on. The...

Important announcement on Chessdon.com by Miriling
Check out http://chessdon.com for an announcement posted on Oct. 10 regarding the dropping of the Richard Peterson lawsuit against the USCF. According to Chessdon, "The USCF has insurance with a $10,000 deductible, most of which was spent in preparing for the litigation." George Mirijanian

Chess Grandmaster says that US Economy is about to collapse by Bruce Draney
Randy Bauer wrote: (Sam Sloan) wrote in message ... In the Land of the Free, We Fight "Terrorism" by Jerome Bibuld
Heil Dubya! When I was in the sixth grade, I had a teacher, Mrs. Wilson, who used to tell us how wonderful it was to live in the United States. Her favorite reason was that, while people had to carry identification at all times in other countries, we could walk the streets with no identification at all and, as long as we were peaceful, we were safe from governmental interference. Oh, well,...

What to do if your opponent erroneously deducts 5 minutes off of a Digital clock? by Isidor Gunsberg
I just played a game where I showed up a couple of minutes late. My opponent was using a Digital Clock, set for the appropriate default Time Delay. However, he also had deducted 5 minutes from each clock, apparently based on the erroneous assumption that such a deduction was mandatory. I talked to the Tournament Director, and he had made no announcement that instructed players to make this time...
