Harkness System as reported in October CL by
Kevin L. Bachler
In article , Miriling says...
Former USCF president John McCrary, in his Chess History (Episode 10) in the
October issue of Chess Life (page 7), writes that "Kenneth Harkness, the
Business Manager of the USCF, developed a rating system that was adopted by the
USCF in 1949."
Harkness, writing in the Official Chess Handbook (published in 1956),...

Let me respond to Sam Sloan. First things first.
(1) I WAS NOT BANNED FOR PLAYING THE ZILBERMINTS GAMBIT. It was

myself.
By the way, Friday Rapids is dwindling. Leif Pressman said they

Oct CL by

Good issue.
1. One of the better covers of recent vintage. 2. Hilbert is great!
More,More, More... 3. Even Larry Eavans is better than usual 4. Liked the
article on the MetroWest Chess Club.
Apparently Kurzdorfer still was the editor; Regardless, was a definite up-tick
from recent issues most of which have been rank.

USCF EB liaison positions unevenly divided by
Miriling
After reading the minutes of the August 11, 2003 open session of the USCF
Executive Board, one quickly realizes that the EB liaison positions to the
various committees and other entities are unevenly distributed.
Tim Hanke has the most number of liaison positions: 12
Beatriz Marinello, the president, has 8.
Messrs. Shutt, Brady, Camaratta and Schultz have four apiece.
It is questionable whether...

Tim, Bea or Stan .... Common by
Duncan Oxley
Common guys WHY can't we see the GP contract.
WHY would a contract be signed that is so bad that the
membership can not be allowed to see it?
I feel like a coyote caught in a trap trying to gnaw my
leg off to find a reason to rejoin USCF.
Help me out here guys.

Online Membership Drive: Shut Up and Join!! by
Altes Wiesel
It's time.
Beatriz and Tim are doing their thing to save our beloved USCF, so the least
we can do is to "back them 100%" by having our own online membership drive!
Let's get all the frequent poster non-members to join. This includes
Draney, KG, and who else? Is Spam Scone a member?
If you are a non-member, let us know why so that we may hound you endlessly
until you succumb and join.

USCF officers please read by
Angelo DePalma
The problem with Games Parlor is it has zero impact on USCF membership and
does nothing for USCF's profile because every player there is already a
member. True? The numbers (that I've seen) are too low, so there's no way to
make up for the fact that people only go there to play games (or maybe only
chess), and that they are USCF members already. I'm not sure about the
financial side, but I'd...

Revisiting June 2001 on Contract Disclosure and Board Oversight. by
Bruce Draney
Took a little digging, but I went to USCF's website, clicked on
govnernace and brought up the transcripts of the motion passed in June
of 2001 by the Redman Board because of DeFeis' signing of the first GP
contract.
For those whose memories of this warm and fuzzy time have faded, DeFeis
signed the contract without showing the final draft to the Board. When
people found out what was in the...

Lev Khariton: Open Letter to www.worldchessrating.ru on Kasparov's Personality Cult by

Last week I sent my open letter to the editors of www.worldchessrating.ru
as regards the abnormal situation: the bloated personality cult of Garry
Kasparov. The readers will understand everything from this letter that I
translated for them from Russian into English. What they will not understand
is that so far I have not received any reply from the editors, Kasparov’s
friends and colleagues. No...

How much do chess books actually cost??? by
Ivan
I went to my local Barnes and Nobles bookstore and found that the new
kasparov book (My Great Predecessors VOL. 1) cost $35.00 on the cover.
So I decided to search the Internet to find better prices.
I then went to chesscafe.com and found it selling for 33.95 .
I visited Amazon and found the book selling at $24.50 . Finally I
went chessusa.com and found the same book selling for 29.75 .
Now all...

What professional services is the USCF buying? by

Sounds like pork. What's the difference between this and
pork?
Also, "consulting work provided by volunteers" is a contradic-

case with some famous...

In the Land of the free, We Fight "Terrorists" by

Heil Dubya!
When I was in the sixth grade, I had a teacher, Mrs. Wilson, who used to tell
us how wonderful it was to live in the United States. Her favorite reason was
that, while people had to carry identification at all times in other countries,
we could walk the streets with no identification at all and, as long as we were
peaceful, we were safe from governmental interference. Oh, well,...

Calling Petrel and Bogner. We Have Another Contract for You to Leak. by
Bruce Draney
Attention Hal Bogner. Attention Petrel. Now is the time to mobilize
our official contract leakers of the past in order to leak the
embarrassing new GP contract that apparently is so bad that no one is
allowed to show anyone how bad it is.
Back in 2000, when Tim Redman clammed up like a gagged man with already
puckered lips, Bogner and Petrel rode over the hill on their shining
white steeds,...

Let the speculation end..... by
Bill Wong
There has been some question about what was in it, the negotiations
between USCF and Gamesparlor, for Al Lawrence. Maybe this is the
answer? www.chesshall.org It seems that US ChessLive has merged with
the Chess Hall of Fame to provide the online playing service. I don't
see any difference in the services offered, and cannot tell how this may
help or hurt USCF.--Bill Wong
