USCF Member Services Area by
Martin Wilber
I just noticed the "Member Services Area" link on the USCF ratings page.
Has this been there long? I don't remember it, but it is GREAT! This
is why I pay a membership fee! I can see all tournaments I have been
in, I can click on any player and see their tournaments - who they
played, etc!
This is the one of the services that the USCF should be providing for my
membership fee. It looks...

Interesting Accounting for the Chess Trust by
ASCACHESS
Questions are being raised by members of the Chess Trust on how much USCF
charged for its "administrative services" for the trust.
It now appears that amount under Niro may have been more than half the Trust's
income.
Does anyone else have more details?

The New Gang of Four by
Sam Sloan
The New Gang of Four
The term "Gang of Four" comes of course from the group that ruled
China when Chairman Mao was still alive but too infirm to be an
effective ruler. The leader of the Gang of Four was the wife of
Chairman Mao. After Chairman Mao died and the Gang-of-Four was
overthrown, the gang members were all put in prison where they
remained until they died.
The first time I ever heard...

Great Moments of Yellow Chess Journalism by
Jerry Spinrad
Given certain recent accusations, I thought I would add my favorite
piece of reporting from my chess history research.
The obituary for the famous player Berthold Englisch (NY Times Oct 20
1897)mentions the fact that
Englisch withdrew from the recent Berlin tournament. Rumors of his
accepting a bribe from a weak player to withdraw were disproved by his
death.

Chess Establishment BLIND To Its Future by
LeModernCaveman
That's why it's dying out.
At the current pace, we can expect to see the internet chess clubs being the
only ones left standing, and they will eventually hold big events offline.
The days of the club-based small tournament are fast drawing to a close.
In the late 1980s, I used to trek 100 miles up on Septa/NJ Transit on a
Thursday night to make it to the "Four Rated Games Tonight" tournament,...

The Great Annotated Empty Moving Boxes Robbery by
Peter van der Hoog
Tim Krabbé also took notice of the "The Great Annotated Empty Moving Boxes
Robbery"? He finds the story "heartbreakingly funny, on a par with I was
tortured at the Pasadena Jailhouse".
http://www.xs4all.nl/~timkr/chess2/diary.htm
Krabbé is, in an awkward sarcastic way, disappointed in Fischer:
"Vintage Fischer - except that one word is shockingly missing - Jew.
One thing I never thought Bobby...

USCF: A different model by
WPraeder
The bigger challenge, it seems to me, is the "vision" thing. Once the
house gets put in order, at least financially, what then? What can the
USCF really do to generate interest in chess in the U.S.? How can it can
create more opportunities for people--adults and kids-- to learn and to
play? That, it seems to me, is where the organization has been most
ineffectual.
Ned,
Well said.

Schultz, Hanke correct on EB motion by
Miriling
It was good to see Don Schultz and Tim Hanke vote correctly, as far as I'm
concerned, on USCF Executive Board motion 04-15 at the EB meeting on Sept. 28
in New Windsor: "To remove Phil Simpkins as Organizer of the Year for
2002/2003."
While Schultz and Hanke were in favor, President Marinello and Vice President
Shutt were opposed. The two Franks, Brady and Camaratta, were absent. Thus, the
motion...
