Mistakes on USCF website need to be corrected by
Miriling
The more I look, the more and more mistakes I find on the USCF website -
http://www.uschess.org
How long has the first name of Chouchanik Airapetian, the Armenian-born player
who has been in the USA since August 1994, been listed as Choucanian in
the Players' Gallery of Selected Players from the Top 100 US Women?
I realize that the website is a very low priority for the federation when
facing...

Searching for Bobby Fischer by
Sam Sloan
Searching for Bobby Fischer
I just replayed the movie "Searching for Booby Fischer" on video. Of
course, I had seen the movie before, but this time I saw a few things
I had not seen previously.
I think that we as chess players can learn a lot from this movie. It
is a masterpiece in the way that it takes a subject most people would
find to be deadly boring and turns it into an exciting drama....

Question for Richard Peterson. by
Bruce Draney
Richard,
What is the current status of your recently filed lawsuit against the
USCF? Have you withdrawn your suit or offered to settle out of court?
What are you asking for in your suit? A couple months ago, you posted
rumors that USCF did not have liability insurance in effect because the
Board had not paid the premium. Can you comment on this at all?
About a month ago, Stan Booz was...

B&E by
Ben Finegold
Hello,
I was under the impression that the USCF Board was to decide this
weekend who would win the B&E bid. I have seen nothing on the website
or in the newsgroups. Was this discussed at the meeting, and has a
decision been made?

Grant still in charge and on site? by
Bruce Draney
It's now been over a month since the Thursday night massacre that
released 17 employees in New Windsor and led to the appointment of
Whatever His Title is Grant Perks to run the office.
Is Grant still in New Windsor, is he back in Ohio, or is he commuting
back and forth?
If Grant is not staying full time in New Windsor, is the office being
supervised by someone else? If he is staying in New...

Is the CCA an expired USCF affiliate? by
Miriling
Has the Continental Chess Association, Bill Goichberg's organization, let its
USCF affiliate membership expire? According to USCF records - msa.usachess.org
- the CCA (USCF Affiliate A5002630) had an expiration date of April 30, 2003.
The business office in New Windsor has either failed to process the CCA's
affiliate renewal or the CCA has failed to renew its affiliate membership.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh by
KidDon
Don't tell RHaas, but:
1. Between the already posted 9/3 membership numbers and January,
2004, we are likely to gain @ 3,000 - 5,000 scholastic members; and
2. The National K-12 is expected to break attendance records (over
2100), but the record will stand for only one year before the event
returns to Central Florida.
We're still in deep sh**, but could that be a glimmer of light at the

USCF's Christmas holiday season by
Miriling
Now that the USCF Executive Board has voted not to begin negotiations to have
its book and equipment business outsourced until the conclusion of its
2003/2004 Christmas holiday season, the question remains as to when this
"holiday season" ends and how the federation plans to promote it. What are its
plans for the holiday catalog? An insert, as usual, in Chess Life? When?
December issue (due out...

Sherzer Case Looks Like Entrapment by
LeModernCaveman
The FBI isn't supposed to be leading its "predators" because the idea is that
they are supposed to be SURE that it's the guy's idea, not the agent's.
They have crossed the line.
The mother never should have contacted the police based on what Sherzer did
until that point (all she had to do was talk to him directly), and what the
agent did after that point (all he had to do was keep things...

How Much to Run Whatever's Left of USCF? by
Bruce Draney
Assuming that the entire expense of doing B&E is passed off to Pein or
whomever, this will finally provide the answer to the question that has
been unanswered for many years and that is how much do the rest of USCF
operations cost when there is no B&E to stock, pay for, advertise,
promote, answer calls and fill orders for?
How many employees will USCF need without a B&E business? How...

Kudos to Frank Brady for Quickly Posting Board Minutes. by
Bruce Draney
Thank heavens that Frank Brady is now USCF Secretary. I just looked at
the USCF website and there are already minutes for the August Board
meetings up. I fully expect Mr. Brady to get the meetings for this past
weekend's meetings up promptly as well.
Contrast that with the pathetic record of the McCrary Board, where Mr.
Smith often took 6 months or longer to post even minimal minutes of
Board...

Crossville move: "Sabine-Alexander gambit" by
Miriling
Check out the story by staff writer Fred Brown in the Sunday (Sept. 28) edition
of the Knoxville (Tenn.) News - knoxnews.com - which starts as follows:
"CROSSVILLE - If everything goes according to plan, a quiet community of
roughly 10,000 people on the bucolic Cumberland Plateau will become the chess
capital of America."
The writer is calling it the "Sabine-Alexander gambit."

Free USCF membership for TDs by
Ivan
I think the USCF should give free adult memberships (w/ chess life) to
all tournament directors that run 10 or more tournaments each year.
I believe that TDs in general are the backbone on US chess since they
organize and run tournaments. Also the tournament rating fees provide
a large chunk of the USCF revenue. Therefore, we should reward our
TDs for their hardwork by giving them free...

Prosecution's Evidence by
Fifiela
"Among the items found in the hotel room and introduced as evidence Friday...
two sex toys -- "tools for degrading and humiliating this ninth-grader,"
Assistant U.S. Attorney Maria Murphy called them in her opening statement.
Stabler acknowledged that while playing the part of the girl, he broached the
idea of Sherzer buying the sex toys for the hypothetical encounter."
