Key Jury Instruction by
KidDon
The jury has been deliberating for four hours already, indicating that
this is not the clear open and shut some thought for one side, and
some thought for the other. Here is a newspaper reporter's account of
at least part of the key jury instruction on the entrapment defense:
"Chief U.S. District Judge Ginny Granade gave the jury special
directions on how to decide whether Stabler entrapped...

USCF president listed as expired member in database by
Miriling
Isn't it strange that the new USCF president, Beatriz Marinello, is listed with
a membership expiration date of August 2003 in the USCF database? Also strange
is the spelling of her first name as Beatrice and her residency as New York,
which was her former residence. She is now officially a resident of Miami,
Florida? Or is she not?

Sherzer Defense strategy by
Isidor Gunsberg
It turns out that the decision to have Sherzer go on the stand, and
admit wrongdoing was quite correct. It was a big risk, but it paid off
for him. By essentially admitting to what the State accused him of
doing, he allowed the jury to focus on the nature of the crime (even
the Prosecutor admitted that Sherzer's actions might be interpreted as
barely legal), and on the entrapment defense. I'm...

I'm glad you're still following the newsgroup, and commenting on various

Have you considered actually playing in a rated tournament? You'd meet a
LOT of old friends, even though most of them have never met you in person.
The camaraderie would be great.

Short bio of Sherzer's lawyer, a federal defender by
Miriling
Here's some background material on Alex Sherzer's lawyer, Carlos Williams, a
black man, who is a federal defender in Mobile, Ala.
He received a bachelor's degree from Friends World College and obtained his law
degree from Antioch School of Law in 1981. He is executive director of Federal
Defenders Inc., based in Mobile. Before joining that organization, he was a
staff attorney with Legal Services...

A Bone for Mr. Booz by
NoMoreChess
..
Stan Booz, who I suspect is far from alone, wonders why it is that Larry Parr
insists upon constantly correcting his grammar -- the last incident consisted
of an eye-test which few older readers would likely pass: Mr. Parr managed to
spot a missing period -- in ten point font! I suspect he either wears
bifocals, or else has one heck of a computer monitor: big screen, anti-glare,
flat-panel,...

OT: Ring, ring... by
RSHaas
Heh, heh, heh....from AOL News:
--------
"Nottingham said the do-not-call list was unconstitutional under the First
Amendment because it does not apply equally to all kinds of speech, blocking
commercial telemarketing calls but not calls from charities. ''The FTC has
chosen to entangle itself too much in the consumer's decision by manipulating
consumer choice,'' Nottingham wrote."

Alex Sherzer Is INNOCENT! by
LeModernCaveman
To say he's guilty would be to say that is because:
1. He and the girl were not married at the time of the meeting; and/or
2. He chose to cross state lines rather than having already lived in Alabama
at the time he met the girl.
In either case, even if you grant that he had the intent to have sex with her,
that act, in and of itself, was not harmful to the girl, as the state of
Alabama...

Morphy's Revenge by
Danny Purvis
(Danny Purvis) wrote
Exactly! The girl was by no means your stereotypical juvenile
delinquent. Sherzer's testimony shows that her father was a
physician. At the least the girl has genes from a woman who attracted
a physician. If her father was also her biological father, she also
has genes from a physician. So the girl has a special heritage and
probably...

Tim Hanke is attacking Zsuzsa Polgar by
ASCACHESS
It is being said that the background of this is that during the USCF
business meetings in Los Angeles last month, Hanke made several
advances towards Ms. Polgar. Ms. Polgar, a married woman, spurned his
advances, and now Hanke is said to be attacking her in retaliation.
"It is being said"
Yes Sam, you are saying it.
There appears to be no depth limit to how low can Sam go.

Making Chess More Social by
Kevin L. Bachler
In other threads, we've noted the success of scholastic chess, in large part due
to the social background -- namely that there is a community of players based on
schools and teams.
Another thread has also noted corporate chess, which seems to often be unrelated
to USCF. These leagues have also been successful in part because of the social
background.
One of the downsides of the super...

Save B&E by modeling it after the Mensa Boutique by
The Masked Bishop
Here's the link, for those who can only wonder...
http://www.mensaboutique.com/
I e-mailed them to ask why they didn't offer logo-embossed dildos, but
that was silly, really, given the hermetic, onanistic lifestyle that
is the average Mensan's.
Of course, a quick canvas over the sea of poorly-dressed nose-pickers
that populate your average over-priced GM feeding trough, excuse me,
