Moving or Mortgaging? by
Kevin L. Bachler
In article , Bruce Draney says...
SNIP
This brings up an excellent question as to whether moving to Crossville
is any longer the best option for the troubled USCF? Consider this.
Most estimates on the cost of moving have been anywhere from
$100,000-$200,000, which will leave us with a very dangerous cushion of
only about $100,000 which according to the last reports...

September Chess Life wastes space with block ad by
Miriling
The September issue of Chess Life shows improper planning with the printing of
a block advertisement for the 2003 U.S. Open Side Events, which consume more
than 1/3 of page 74. Maybe this was done to show that an Aug. 16 event was
"cancelled," but that's a lot of valuable space to use for an original
three-line TLA. The block ad, which also appeared in the August issue, lists
side events from...

How is "chess" broke if GEEKS play it? by
LeModernCaveman
How many BILLIONAIRES out there play chess?
If one of them could save BOWLING by purchasing the PBA for $5 million, you'd
think the USCF would be a breeze to get that type of patronage.

Labor Day weekend major tournaments in USA by
Miriling
The Labor Day weekend (Aug. 29-Sept.1) has historically been a time for major
state and regional championships in the USA. The following tournaments, listed
from the highest to the lowest in Grand Prix Point totals, according to TLAs in
Chess Life, will be held:
The Southern California Open (San Diego): 60 GPP
125th annual New York State Championship (Kerhonkson): 50 GPP
22nd North American Open...

ASA HOFFMAN by
Jerry
I always used to like playing Asa. He's perhaps
the best player who shows up frequently. I know it may
sound silly, but I used to like the rapids ratings, class prizes,
and the refreshments. I think other people liked these
things too. And the rapids like any other tournament
is a tool for aquiring and retaining members. When
I helped restart the rapids, my idea was that for members
it...

Chess and Business by
ASCACHESS
Now here's a guy who appears to know how to mix chess and business:
http://www.trivalleyherald.com/Stories/0,1413,86~10671~1546136,00.html
Too bad they didn't spell his name correctly.
His name is Riley Hughes, not Randy.

The leaner, meaner and more efficient USCF machine by
Paul Truong
Dear friends, colleagues and chess lovers:
I understand that some people may have a gloomy attitude toward the
future of USCF. While it is easy to come up with that conclusion, I
would like to offer a different perspective of the new USCF.
Anyone who has read the financials will agree that serious cut backs
had to occur. It was not an easy decision but the EB moved ahead with
it. That move...

Who 'owns' the Rating system? by
Don Shennum
Hypothetically speaking, could someone (I know not who) just provide a
service organization to ONLY maintain a rating database. Would there
be 'copyright' infringement issues? Would they have to start out with
all players being = 0 , or could they use USCF ratings to help
normalize the data or provide 'estimated' playing strength.
Sure this has been rehashed before, just curious for the latest...

How about NO chess federation? by
Jerry
"Kevin L. Bachler" wrote:
Probably not. We've done that. People found a need to get together to form a
single federation.
The USCF is left over from a time when there were very few successful chess
businesses,
so one larger non-profit was needed. Now there are many chess businesses and

Alex Lenderman, Aged 13, Score IM Norm in Hungary by
Isidor Gunsberg
An intersting tidbit:
The First Saturday Web Site states that an Alex Lenderman, from the
USA, has earned an IM Norm in the August "First Saturday" IM
Tournament.
The site also says that Lenderman is just 13, and gives his
rating as 2219.
In earning the IM norm, he had a TPR of 2513, by scoring 10.0

Professionalism in chess by
Paul Truong
Dear Mr. John Dough:
I am not sure who you are and what is your mission. Maybe you do not
want USCF to succeed? I have no answer for that. However, I can
assure you that I have no idea who Mr. Bob Bennett is. There are many
people who support what I do. Some may not because they do not like
changes. One thing for sure, I do not condone anyone using foul
language under any circumstance. ...

USCF Insolvency? Scholastics Try to Help by
Jane Addams
Scholastic Committee,
The new USCF Executive Board has come to the realization that the financial
situation was much worse than anyone realized. In LA we were made to believe
that it was bad, but fixable with a few adjustments of the budget and some
tightening of the belt. When Beatriz Marinello, the new USCF President, and
some others got to the office they found that the problem was much...

Forget the USCF...time to debate what's next by
The Masked Bishop
With the recent announcement of the staff cuts (if true), it's another fork
in the roast. The USCF is DONE.
So it seems to your humble ecclesiastic here that debating a) the merits of
current USCF leadership or b) what the USCF might do to save its hoary old
ass or c) who is to blame for the latest round of ineptitude is pointless.
Moot. Save it for the historians (Chessdon, taking up the pen...

Where were the personnel cuts concentrated? by
Bruce Draney
Although the entire senior management of the publications department
were dismissed as was Tom Brownscombe, we are left wondering where the
bulk of the other 14 staff cuts fell? Were they relatively evenly
distributed in all departments or were they concentrated in one or two
departments, while other departments considered critical were spared?
I'm guessing that the part timers were probably...
