Where were the personnel cuts concentrated? by
Bruce Draney
Although the entire senior management of the publications department
were dismissed as was Tom Brownscombe, we are left wondering where the
bulk of the other 14 staff cuts fell? Were they relatively evenly
distributed in all departments or were they concentrated in one or two
departments, while other departments considered critical were spared?
I'm guessing that the part timers were probably...

Is USCF really serious about its B&E business? by
Miriling
Is the U.S. Chess Federation really serious about its book and equipment
business? Judging by its online shopping listings on its website, I would say
not. A prime example would be the failure of (not yet) listing the latest
edition of the Official Rules of Chess. The September issue of Chess Life
includes an ad (buried, as far as I'm concerned) for the latest edition on page
49 (unnumbered),...

McCrary's resignation not posted on USCF website by
Miriling
The USCF website was updated Friday, August 22, with a listing of the current
Executive Board members, all now with mailing addresses and e-mail addresses.
The newly elected members, Marinello, Hanke and Schultz, had previously been
listed with no addresses.
Noticeably absent from the list is John McCrary, the former USCF president, who
was the only one listed with a (color) photo of himself. But...

What is going on with Frank N.? by
Bruce Draney
Recent side comments by Stan Booz, suggest that ED Frank Niro is or has
been absent from the office a great deal lately. While certainly Frank
is a busy man, one has to wonder whether Frank is absent on chess
related affairs or is absent due to personal and family affairs?
Is Frank being compensated for personal time while absent? Does anyone
find it odd that Frank would be taking extensive...

Fine, but that doesn't you can't call someone a disappointment a la Todd
Marinovich, Todd Van Poppel or Harold Miner.

Will Tim Hanke actually take his seat on the USCF Executive Board? by
Sam Sloan
Will Tim Hanke actually take his seat on the USCF Executive Board?
As soon as it became apparent that Tim Hanke had won election to the
USCF Executive Board, somebody asked whether Hanke would be willing to
serve since, during the election campaign, Hanke had not seemed
serious about wanting to be elected.
Indeed, throughout the campaign, Hanke had constantly made racist,
sexist, obscene and...

Perfect Timing, Maybe.. by
RSHaas
Now that Chess HQ has evidently entered its "quiet" period the timing may be
perfect to latch onto the turnkey fundraising program that I have sent to
Beatriz and Tim. Chess HQ could use its huge database to recruit its level 1
downline and at its own level 0 start showing the program to other non-profits.
Chess HQ's only cost, other than time and effort, would be $20 per month to
participate in...

New USCF office manager fined $1,000 in 2002 by
GrantPerks
George,
This was a fine against the firm I sold in 2001 as well as against myself
personally. The purchaser of the firm, a corporation that had the rights to use
my name in the county the office was located did not remove my signage from the
building that was used for the firm. Instead of paying an attorney $200 per
hours and taking a day off from work, I paid the fine.
My personal CPA...

Was anyone present or has heard about the incident with GM Rohde at the New

He was visually agitated at his expert level opponent who did not resign at the
first sign of losing the game. Others could tell something was wrong so a
small crowd began to hover. 6-7 moves later when the expert...
