Is Sam Sloan Okay?!? by
Oreo Knight
Is Sam Sloan okay? Is he still alive in NYC? Did his cab get mobbed by
desperate individuals trying to get across town at any cost? Is he
busy looting the local chess shops? IS HE THE ONE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE
POWER OUTTAGE? Or did he get help from his nefarious assistant Larry
Parr?
just checking in,
O.K.

Bob Bennett is Paul Truong by
John Dough
Bob/Paul,
Okay, you dodged the questions when I asked if you were in LA during
the US Open and you won't say where you live. So now, I guess I must
post some proof. While you are in LA you are using Google thru your
AOL account. Just like Paul. When you are both in NY, you use Google
thru your AOL account. Just like Paul.
This is despite the fact that AOL newsgroups is easier to navigate
than...

Another voice on Fischer by
LeModernCaveman
A lot of opinions get bandied about on this forum concerning Bobby
Fischer
and Garry Kasparov, and their um, quirks. A lot gets said about whether
or
not they were good champions (or if they, in fact, still ARE champions --
I
think it's like a lifetime title, but that's another thread). All the
ballyhoo aside, I just really liked Andy Soltis' final paragraph...

MR. BROCK'S "CULTURAL" ALLUSION
By Larry Parr
Bill Brock's "cultural" allusion to a movie called Taxi Driver with an
actress called Jodie Foster gets the better of us. We have never seen the film
and know nothing more about the actress in question than that she was the love
interest of John Hinckley. At our home we prefer films such as Bringing Up
Baby with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn...

Bill's Reporting. by
Bruce Draney
One of the biggest cheerleaders and spinners for the
Niro-McCrary-Camaratta axis was our good buddy Bill Goichberg who
frequently posted inside information with his own peculiar slant and
bias to it, months before anyone could read or challenge the
information's accuracy on his own webpage. For over two years if you
wanted to know what was going on at USCF you never looked at USCF's
website...

The Ten Buck Town by

Hey, after Chess HQ gets settled into Crossville maybe it can reduce costs
enough to clear $10 from the adult dues. Then we could go Mensa style and have
the world's best chess federation. (RSHaas)

bad karma on RGCP by

Certain topics are too serious to joke about, and for anyone with the
normal human allotment of empathy, almost too painful to discuss.

rising star alert by
Kenneth Sloan
One of the attractions of the US Open for me is the opportunity to
meet young players who will be the stars of the future. Every once in
awhile I find myself playing a youngster who proves to be surprisingly
difficult to beat. After some of these games, I know that that was the
*last* time that I'll ever defeat that particular opponent.
The best example of this may have been in Chicago, when I...

New Boards 2nd Mistake by
John Dough
Bob,
Come on, lets be civil. No reason to stir up visions of a nude Sam
Sloan.
Okay, so you say you don't know Paul Truong. You seem to know so much
about him. So, you didn't at least introduce yourself to him at
Foxwoods or in LA at the US Open? I assume you were at least in LA,
your post about Foxwoods seemed to be a slam at Aviv.

One of the advance delegate motions to be voted on this August at the USCF

Power Outage on Eastern Seaboard Traced to Computer Explosion in New Windsor. by
Bruce Draney
This just in:
FEMA officials and New York and Con-Edison Power officials are looking
into the possibility that the massive power outage this afternoon at
about 4:00 PM was caused by a shortout of the motherboard of a TRS 80
computer in the New Windsor headquarters of USCF.
Acting whatever his title is, Mike Nolan could not be reached for
official comment but denied that USCF is any longer using...

USCF audited financials show large loss by

The USCF audited financials, released today in Los Angeles, showed a
surprisingly large loss, coming at a time when the ED and Board were
expecting
a small profit. Much of the difference was due to an error in the
recording of
multi-year memberships. For details see www.chessnews.org.

With 3/4 of the tournament in the books (and yours truly clinging on to a +
score for dear life at 5-4), I thought I'd give my impressions. Despite claims
of a poor turnout, I have to give this tournament a generally positive review.
I really think that any low numbers are merely due to a...
