Why Don't the Online TLA's Match Chess Life? by Kevin L. Bachler
I encourage my students to go to certain tournaments by copying and pasting the TLA and sending it to them by email. For example, I wanted to tell them about some tournaments coming up in Wisconsin. But Wisconsin shows 4 events in CL, and 0 online. What gives? Kevin L. Bachler

Mike Goodall Teaches Chess by StanB

Interservice Championships (or Wish Me Luck!) by Matt Nemmers
36 hours from now I'll be engrossed in my first round game at the Interservice Championships at Camp Lejeune, NC. (The individual players who place in the top six will represent the United States in the NATO Chess Championships held in Coppenhagen, Denmark next month.) As the lowest rated member of the six-man Navy team, I'm gonna need a TON of luck playing against the tough opposition in the...

Reds/Blacks etc... by Don Mihokovich
I think I'm getting a fairly decent picture of the Red vs. Black et al. color scheme, but would someone who has been around longer than me please give a clear explaination? KidDon

Kasparov refuses to continue Simul game in Chicago! by Paul Rubin
(LeModernCaveman) writes: Fischer wouldn't have done that! Fischer played the Evans gambit in a lot of simuls, and might have been less willing to do that against strong players. 2084 wouldn't have fazed him though.

The Hundred Years (flame-)War by NoMoreChess
.. There seems to be utter confusion on the part of several posters here as to the real identities of their perceived opposition. There also is an obvious lack of comprehension on the part of one poster, who can't quite figure out the difference between a "troll," and a person who criticizes him or his pal. These are two entirely different things, of course, but a certain level of intelligence...

More lies on Fischer by Sam Sloan
The main problem with this story is that Peter Nemenyi was not Bobby's Father. Peter Nemenyi was Bobby's half brother. Peter Nemenyi was born on 14 April 1927. Thus, he was 6 years old in 1933, as the article states. Bobby's father was Paul Nemenyi who, according to this article, had disappeared by 1933. Other aspects to this story I find to be reasonable, except for the obvious error in date....

YooHoo, Tim by RSHaas
Tim, somewhere in another thread I think it was you who said that each and every one of the USCF's functions should operate at a profit. Have I recalled that correctly? Evidently you think that can be achieved, otherwise you wouldn't have said it. OK... suppose the USCF's $6 million gross can yield +8% bottom line. That'd be $480,000. You've also said that the chess pie is so small that...

Rebel Tim? by Don Mihokovich
Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but IMO Tim Hanke is sounding more like a part of the establishment and less like a rebel since the election. KidDon

The election has probably delayed the membership numbers by GreenPencil
Last month the update was very late. This month it is even later. I assume it's because of the chaos created from the elections. Does anyone have them yet?

Nick Bourbaki's many lies by Nick
I am writing this post today to set straight the factual record with regard to a direct personal attack by Tim Hanke, who *created* this thread only for that purpose. The direct ancestor of this thread was named, "Tim Hanke's Cultural Prejudice", which was created by Don Mihokovich, *not* me. Tim Hanke has not written to me recently; after I have completed my responses to his previous attacks,...

A Feud for All Seasons by NoMoreChess
.. Not at all. Hanke and his supporters (including NoMo) Just how much did I donate to Mr. Hanke last year? I need to know, so I can write it off on my taxes as "charitable contributions." Please don't tell me he is not a licensed charity case. Surely, there must be some way to connect Hanke to the USCF, thence to the ACF?!? Double standard. I am said to "support" Hanke, for no particular...
