CJA - 2003 Chess Journalist of the Year Nominees - This is a joke, yes? by
Spam Scone
(John Fernandez) wrote in message ...
Tony Rook - The sentimental winner, but come on. I like the guy, but he's been
learning on the job in a pretty brutal fashion. He often has absolutely nothing
to contribute in terms of background on the players, since he doesn't know any
of them, and he's too weak to...

I have a sense of humor. However, some things simply do not amuse
me.
Especially not jerks who can only tell someone out for some fun to "get a
life". Was the original post a silly question? Perhaps. But I find it
intellectually stimulating, as I have never considered it...

2003 World Open Statistics by
Ivan
That was a really strong open section this past week. There were over
35 GMs playing. I think there was a 10 way tie for first place so
each person wins almost $3000.
What is interesting is that the GMs that got 11th - 20th place will
only get $80 since they have to pay their entry fee.
I am sure Goicherg is very happy with this turnout. I somehow feel
this format is not really as good as it...

Sherzer age Debate by
Scott
In terms of the Sherzer age debate - if the girl was a med student and
chess master herself - I would not find much wrong with the encounter
other than Sherzer's obvious disregard for the law and the like. It
is clear that Sherzer was in it for the physical encounter and there
was no redeeming value. It should be noted that if this girl had even
half a brain we would not be having this...

Jaan Ehlvest wins World Open by
Sam Sloan
The 2003 World Open has been won by Jaan Ehlvest of Estonia.
After 9 rounds of play, 10 players were tied for first. Under the new
Goichberg Rules, the top two on tie-breaking points were to play a one
game play-off match at 6 minutes to 5 minutes with the player of black
having draw odds. Ehlvert and Smirin were the top two on tie-breaking
points. Ehlvert had better tie-breaks so he got to...

Fischer's Bust was unbusted by Larry Evans in the Evans Edition of

Bobby Fischer and the King's Gambit by

I would direct any interested readers to 'A Legend on the Road', John
Donaldson's book on Fischer's 1964 simul tour. Playing white, Fischer
tried the King's Gambit seventeen times. Although only playing
amateurs, there are some real gems among the games.
