USCF Missing Signed Checks by
Tomismith
A former employee of the USCF apparently has MANY checks signed by former ED
Frank Niro which s/he is refusing to return to the USCF because of a salary
dispute with New Windsor.
These checks were to be used to pay the prizes at this year's US Open, but
financial reverses made those payments impossible at this time.

Rules Question: pairing twice? (was: Rules Question) by
Dr Fossil
On 06 Sep 2003 at 21:34:59 GMT, Bill Goichberg scribbled:
-I would keep a 5-round Swiss with 5 players as a Swiss and let
-players face each other twice if necessary, which is perfectly
-legal under the circumstances.
The general concept behind this has a name. It's called the
Italian Pairing System. See Martin E. Morrison's TOURNAMENT DIREC-
TION GUIDE AND MANUAL, July 1971, page 8.7. ...

Why Scholastics Are Successful, What we Can Learn by
Kevin L. Bachler
Many people feel that scholastic memberships are successful primarily because of
the lower dues charged to them. While this is a factor, I think this answer is
far too simplistic. Youth dues have been around for some time, yet the
scholastic success is fairly recent. Certainly dues are a factor, but there are
other considerations which are very important. If we better understand...

Astronomers Discover Planet Sloan. by
Bruce Draney
Astronomers at the MacDonald Observatory, have announced the discovery
of still another planet, which they have named Planet Sloan, in honor of
our truth challenged poster to this newsgroup, one S. Sloan.
On Planet Sloan, people often spend their entire day either attacking
other people's credibility so that people will not realize they have
none of their own.
On Planet Sloan, the truth always...

Why be a member of the Marshall Chess Club? - Or any chess club really?... by
Larry S. Tamarkin
I think that it should be remembered who the members are - They are
the ones paying the dues. They have joined your club to enjoy the
offered benefits offered of by the club and the discounts on the
events that are being offered there.
If your members receive 'value for money spent', then they will renew
their membership dues, but only if the management and Governors of
your club appreciates...

Suggested EB Meeting Place - Ft. Worth by
RSHaas
I think Ft. Worth, Texas would be a good spot for a future EB meeting.
That's where American Mensa is HQ'd. Invite Mensa biggies over for a pow-wow
and an exchange of ideas. Visit Mensa HQ and see what they do. Examine Mensa
top to bottom and see what might be borrowed from Mensa in a possible
adaptation for chess.
Any objections, guys? Hey, a little exchange of ideas won't hurt.

Can Someone List ALL Samford Fellowship Winners... by
Doctor SBD
Why not do your own research/homework?
Maybe you would actually learn something about chess.
I will say one thing - Mr. Samford was a Birmingham player who gave a lot of
money to develop chess.

Frank C.'s Little Problem by
Bruce Draney
In my opinion our former VP of Finance, now turned Member at Large, has
to make a tough choice before the USCF catalog goes out to the members.
Frank's chess set company should have all of its ads immediately pulled,
if he chooses to remain on the Board.
The bylaws seem very clear to almost everyone but Frank's closest
supporters that a Board member may not profit personally from...

Rules Question by
Duncan Oxley
Maybe an NTD or someone involved in the rulebook can
help me here.
Someone argued to me that 27A1 means that its perfectly
acceptable to pair players more than once (against each other)
in a swiss.
I looked up some of his crosstables on the msn site and lo
and behold this guy ran a 5 round swiss with 5 players. What
an abomination that was to look at.

Acclaimed UAB philosopher Rachels dead at 62 by
Doctor SBD
So runs the headline in this morning's Birmingham news. James Rachels died of
cancer.
Some statements and quotes from the article:
1. "Dr Rachels' book, "The Elements of Moral Philosophy" has sold more copies
than any ethics text in America."
2. Dr. Rachels was the first moral philosopher to publish an article in the New
England Journal of Medicine.

Repairing USCF's image. by
Bruce Draney
Since a good discussion has been generated about how USCF can be
successful in the future, there seems to be some degree of agreement
among some anyway, that USCF is damaged goods to some people.
How could USCF begin to build trust among vendors, organizers,
directors and members?
This is a very difficult, but very important thing for USCF to do,
before it can put the last 7 years behind it,...

Read the article again. It seems to me that Mr. Charles was becoming

Charles was responding with disgust. Like "Leave me alone!" ...

USCF: The Office That Time Forgot by
AlforChess
As both Glenn Peterson and Kalev Pehme point out, we are
paying $24,000 a year for color separations, and we could save this entire
sum by spending a few hundred dollars for the Adobe Acrobat software
I'm sure that your observations on the pub dept are in general spirit correct.
However, Acrobat printing, rather than full-sep printing has been in use.
You can occasionally spot this on...

Marshall Chess Club by

I can explain the illegal election:
The bylaws specify that only Resident
members may vote or serve on the board.
It is the law that bylaws be followed.
Members who were not Resident members
voted and were re-elected to the board.

Mountain Trolls sighted again by
Ernest W. Schlich
This thread has been too quiet too long. DRUGS AND CHESS!!!!
I happened to be hanging around in the hotel lobby where I was staying while
playing this weekend at the VA Closed. (nice turnout, especially considering
the site was not at a hotel, it was a 3 day event, and was held on Fri. - Sun,
and with a very late round final round on Sunday)
In the Sept. 1 issue of Business Week, there was a...
