Kasparov refuses to continue Simul game in Chicago! by
Scott
http://www.mrfixitonline.com/readTopic.asp?PostingId=1366118
"Kasparov rather nervously asked me if I had a rating. I replied 2084
and he, not looking very happy, asked why I didn't write it down in
front of the board next to my name. I replied that no one asked me too
and that the Belzberg people knew my rating and only today OK my
playing since I am a client. He then stated that if he had...

I'm an expert too, Garry. Are you gonna DUCK me? by
LeModernCaveman
Two-game match, Garry.
Anytime during any World Open is fine.
You don't mind giving a lowly expert home city advantage do ya?
Since when is the CENTER COUNTER a "theoretical" opening anyway?

On Kasparov's WIMPING OUT...I had a similar situation once. by
LeModernCaveman
Okay, so it wasn't for the world title, but I was by far the strongest player
in the coffeehouse, and some Ivy-League type had called me out.
We're playing and I castle, only I'm informed by him that I couldn't castle
"because I had already been in check." I used to carry a rulebook with me in
case something like this happened, but didn't have it in my possession.
I looked at the board,...

Working Capital by
RSHaas
There are just under 700 adult USCF affiliates. I wonder what is their
aggregate sum of chess oriented working capital? Of the rough 700, how many
would have $10,000 or more of personal funds that they risk to produce chess?
How many state affiliates have $5000 of free working capital after newsletter
expenses? How many state associations front the money for their own state
championships? ...

I'm from San Antonio, Texas. Question: should kids from Mexico be required
to join USCF just to play in a local UCSF rated tournament? I don't think so
if they are scholastic/under 19 years old.

Pairing Question by
John Fernandez
Going into the final round of the 66th New York Masters, we had a bit of a
pairing argument, which I hope you guys can help me with. Here is the
situation, and I'm showing all work.
There were two players at 2.5/3. They play each other, no problem.
There were five players at 2.0/3, and one at 1.5/3. Here's their pairing and
breakdown:
Player 1 2693 W- B3 W-
Player 2 2647 W4 B- W3

Red Management Illusions by
ASCACHESS
Yes, and what else? The question wasn't intended to be facetious. My gut is
that B&E is shrinking (from historical levels, inflation adjusted), but I
don't
know for sure.
Kevin L. Bachler
Strangely enough, as the market becomes more efficient, USCF's assumed
advantages diminish.

Yesterday I came across this article from "The Independent Newspaper"
and even translated it into English. If you want to know, how
"truthful" Russian journalists are, how "carefully" they check the
information and how "well" they know chess history, don't miss it!

U.S. Open Advance Entries by
Hal Terrie
George Mirijanian expresses dismay about the number of advance entries
listed on the USCF web site. I've just arrived in LA and spoke to
Jerry Hanken last night. He told me that, due to an error by the USCF
office, not all the advance entries are listed yet. He still hopes to
get 600 players by the end of the event.

I love chess history, but I think that right now we have to discuss
something far more important things than the parentage (that is, who his
father was) of Bobby Fischer. With September 18 looming on the horizon, the
beginning of the Ponomariov – Kasparov match in Yalta, I would like to ask
the chess world some questions. Chess history is being made...

Calif. players 60% of U.S. Open advance entries by
Miriling
On re-checking the Web site http://usopenchess.org one can find that California
players represent roughly 60% of the advance entries listed on that site for
this years's U.S. Open in Los Angeles. According to Hal Terrie via Jerry
Hanken, not all the advance entries were posted by the USCF office.
Nevertheless, the number of California players was approximately 150 out of a
total of 250...

Lets Use the Old System by
ComputerlessBrother
In a recent post it was asked why the USCF had seperate fees for TLAs
and for Rating Fees. Maybe we should go back to the old system where
there was (usually) only one fee for both the TLA and the rating fee.
For those who do not remember that far back at one time the USCF had a
system whereby the cost of the TLA was included as part of the rating
fee. Depending on the size of the TLA there...
