Question....EB elections and new appointments by
Tim Hanke
"Matt Nemmers" wrote ...
Just out of curiosity and not that I'd like to see them go.....
Did Tim Hanke and Beatriz Marinello have to give up their spots on the EB
to
take over as VP of Finance and President respectively? If so, who took
over
for them? If not, why? Isn't that a little too much responsibility?
Matt,

Booz appointed to key USCF committee posts by
Tim Hanke
I have appointed Stan Booz as Chair of both the Finance Committee and the
Audit Committee.
Stan will pick his own committee members.
I have confidence Stan will provide the toughness, common sense, and
financial savvy we need in the USCF during these hard times.

Transcripts or tape recordings? by
Bruce Draney
I'm assuming that the age old question about accurate and timely
reporting of what goes on at USCF Board meetings was tabled due to our
annual financial crisis. While the question of whether Board
transcripts or tape recordings were better was not resolved, the main
point is probably that where there is a genuine willingness to openly
communicate, the means will be found to do so.
I am greatly...

Is This Truly a Crisis Anymore? by
Bruce Draney
Perhaps one of the most frequently misused terms at USCF and on this
forum is the word, "crisis". Every year it seems that someone points
out that we are once again in a financial "crisis". Use of this term
dates back to at least 1996 when Dorsch and Eade claimed there was a
financial "crisis". At the time this was denied vehemently by their
opponents. Then when Redman took over, his...

Go Aigner! by
Fifiela
Of course, despite this- they have invented a rule (using a house-rule end
around), that all games must be minimum 15 moves and minimum 1 hour playing.
The two GMs who violated this rule were fined the cost of their entry fee.
Great Rule and Bravo for sticking to their guns!

Reminiscing about 1957 U.S. Open in Cleveland by
Miriling
In the August 15 edition of Hanken's Corner from the 2003 U.S. Open games
bulletins, Jerry Hanken reminisces about his first U.S. Open in Cleveland
(Ohio), when he was a "fresh 22-year-old kid from Cincinnati," scoring 6-6.
GM Arthur Bisguier, who played in the '57 Open, also remembers the event,
referring to it in his remarks in "A brief History of the U.S. Open," found in
the 2003 Delegates...

U.S. Open official player count should be 455 by
Miriling
The number of players who competed in the 2003 U.S. Open in Los Angeles should
be listed officially as 455 and not 458, as has been posted in several places
on the newsgroup.
Three players are listed twice in the final standings: GM Edhi Handoko (2529),
Neil Regan (1926) and Robert Hughes (1603). All three were re-entries - the
only ones in the 12-round tournament.
Thus, the official player count...

What Did McCrary Say in the Latest Chess Life? by
Bruce Draney
A poster recently alluded to what is most likely the USCF President's
Letter in the most recent issue of Chess Life being, worth a laugh or
two. I wondered if someone could summarize what the letter basically
said?
I no longer receive any copies of Chess Life, as my son is a college
student now and he did not renew his membership for $49.00 after it
expired in the Spring.
In my final act of...

Is Sam Sloan Okay?!? by
Oreo Knight
Is Sam Sloan okay? Is he still alive in NYC? Did his cab get mobbed by
desperate individuals trying to get across town at any cost? Is he
busy looting the local chess shops? IS HE THE ONE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE
POWER OUTTAGE? Or did he get help from his nefarious assistant Larry
Parr?
just checking in,
O.K.

Bob Bennett is Paul Truong by
John Dough
Bob/Paul,
Okay, you dodged the questions when I asked if you were in LA during
the US Open and you won't say where you live. So now, I guess I must
post some proof. While you are in LA you are using Google thru your
AOL account. Just like Paul. When you are both in NY, you use Google
thru your AOL account. Just like Paul.
This is despite the fact that AOL newsgroups is easier to navigate

Another voice on Fischer by
LeModernCaveman
A lot of opinions get bandied about on this forum concerning Bobby
Fischer
and Garry Kasparov, and their um, quirks. A lot gets said about whether
or
not they were good champions (or if they, in fact, still ARE champions --
I
think it's like a lifetime title, but that's another thread). All the
ballyhoo aside, I just really liked Andy Soltis' final paragraph...

MR. BROCK'S "CULTURAL" ALLUSION
By Larry Parr
Bill Brock's "cultural" allusion to a movie called Taxi Driver with an
actress called Jodie Foster gets the better of us. We have never seen the film
and know nothing more about the actress in question than that she was the love
interest of John Hinckley. At our home we prefer films such as Bringing Up
Baby with Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn...
