State Opens on Labor Day by Old Haasie
How well did the various state open tournaments do this past Labor Day? I skipped the Florida Open. Too expensive overall, maybe $500 just to play six games of chess. Sorreeeee. Maybe my USCF Metro District will organize some events closer to home. Old Haasie

online business education by GarMil7641@gmail.com
The naming of degrees eventually became linked with the subjects studied. Scholars in the faculties of arts or grammar became known as masters, but those in philosophy, medicine and law were known as doctor. As study in the arts or in grammar was a necessary prerequisite to study in subjects such as philosophy, medicine and law, the degree of doctor assumed a higher status than the...

"enforcement" vs. "strict enforcement" by samsloan
The Great Issue of the Day which is currently being debated by the USCF Executive Board is whether there should be "enforcement" of the guidelines for allowing postings to the moderated USCF Issues Forum, or whether that is insufficient and there should rather be "strict enforcement". Bill Goichberg feels that "enforcement" should be sufficient, but Channing, Truong and Polgar insist that rather...

Catching Up. by Bruce
Okay please forgive me, because I left this forum at the end of 2003 and I was wondering if people can answer some of these questions regarding what happened at USCF after I left: a) What became of US ChessLive and the contract that it had with USCF? b) Who is the current editor of Chess Life and what kind of magazine is Chess Life now in terms of length and quality?

Accoona Securities Scandal by samsloan
http://susanpolgar.blogspot.com/2007/08/accoona-files-for-805-million-ipo.html I am wondering what this is all about. This company, touted on Susan's website only a few days ago, is now in trouble with the SEC and the public offering has been withdrawn. I am wondering if Susan is involved in some way with these people. Sam Sloan

Miami Chess Open by Old Haasie
In a few weeks the Miami Chess Open will take place. Big production. Lots of prize money for a chess tournament. Based on about 750 or something like that. It will be interesting to see how many players south Florida can draw. Offhand, I'm gonna guess Miami will pull in somewhat less than 300 and the promoter will lose a big chunk of dough. But what do I know? Nothing. Maybe I'm wrong and...

Mensa Model: One Major Benefit .. among many by Old Haasie
One major benefit among many in the Mensa Model scheme is the potential build-up of money in the metro umbrella account. Here's how: Suppose a District umbrella chose to run only tournaments, maybe four per year. Instead of blowing their on one big "production" they tried to design their tournaments to fit only a realistic guess as to the drawing power of their area. Tough to do, but if they...
