Default Why the USA Delegation is upset by the Defection of Beatriz

Ms. Marinello sounds very reasonable to me, on this issue. It is one thing

There is nothing reasonable about it.

In January, Beatriz Marinello voted to endorse Bessel Kok for election
as FIDE President.

Based upon that, the USCF Executive Board voted to nominate Beatriz
Marinello for election as FIDE General Secretary for the Americas and
to pay the expenses of Beatriz to attend the FIDE Congress in Turin,
Italy as a representative of the USA.

Now, suddenly, Beatriz has moved to change her vote and vote to
endorse Kirsan Ilyumzhinov instead.

Naturally, now that Beatriz no longer supports the candidate endorsed
by the USCF, the USCF no longer nominates Beatriz for election and no
longer is willing to spend several thousand dollars to send Beatriz to
Italy.

If Bill Goichberg has made a mistake, it has been to give Beatriz
three days to change her mind, whereas he should have cancelled her
trip and her nomination immediately.

Now Beatriz has gone public with her complaint that Bill gave her
three days to change her mind and has posted her complaint about Bill
on rec.games.chess.politics, a public forum read by thousands of chess
players around the world daily. She also posted it on the USCF Forum.

Her letter has just appeared on the Official Campaign website of
Kirsan Ilyumzhinov for President.

This all has to be taken in the context of past events.

In 2002, Ignatius Leong ran for FIDE President. He was the only
candidate to run against Kirsan.

Leong withdrew making the election uncontested and was not held. As a
reward, Leong was given the position of General Secretary of FIDE and
most of the members of his slate were also awarded positions in FIDE.

In 1996, Steve Doyle was running for election on the Jaime Sunye Neto
Slate against Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.

Doyle defected on the day before the election was to be held and
joined the Kirsan slate. As a reward for switching sides, Doyle was
made FIDE Vice-President, a position he holds to this day.

Also in 1996, Emmanuel Omuku of Nigeria was running on the Jaime Sunye
Neto slate. Omuku defected at the same time Doyle did and brought with
him all of the votes of the African delegates. As a reward Omuku was
made General Secretary of FIDE, a position he held for several years.

The simultaneous defections of Doyle and Omuku gave Kirsan Ilyumzhinov
his margin of victory. Since then until now, there has never been a
contested election for FIDE President.

So, there is a clear pattern. People who defect to Kirsan Ilyumzhinov
get rewarded. That clearly explains why Beatriz Marinello has defected
and why the rest of the USA delegation is very upset about this.

She's a smart one. She made one heck of a deal for herself. You're just
jealous because she's smart enough to know when to defect while
Schultz, Channing and Goichberg are left holding her doo doo.

Was the missing $14,000 ever traced to Doyle? What became of that
matter?

Beatriz made a heck of a deal for herself with Ilyumzhinov. She should
be praised for being able to pull off this deal.
