Default Proposal to Have Miss Teen USA Appear at USCF National Scholastics

A proposal has appeared on the USCF Issues Forum to ask Miss Teen USA
make a celebrity appearance at the USCF National Scholastic Chess
Championships.

That will certainly bring in more young boy players than that middle-
aged lady they used to pay to appear there.

However, I am suggesting Miss Teen South Carolina USA instead.

Here is the proposal and my response:

we have had college scholarship packages at Nationals (not hyped
enough by the National Office), I like how they spell it out in black-
and-white.

The MISS TEEN USA® 2009 prize package includes: custom diamond
tiara and jewelry created by Diamond Nexus Labs; a two-year
scholarship from the New York Film Academy worth more than $100,000
dollars to its acting or film-making programs; eveningwear gowns
designed by Sherri Hill; a cosmetic package by LOVER Cosmetics; an
assortment of DXG USA Luxe Collection video cameras, year-long supply
of Farouk Systems products, makers of CHI, the original Ceramic
Technology tools; a six-day/ five-night vacation for two, at Atlantis,
Paradise Island, Bahamas; membership to Gravity Fitness and pampering
at John Barrett Salon; fashion portfolio by leading fashion
photographer Fadil Berisha; consultations with nutritionist and
creator of The F-Factor Diet™ Tanya Zuckerbrot; dermatology and
skincare services by Dr. Cheryl Thellman-Karcher; consultations with
personal stylist Billie Causieestko and access to an event wardrobe
from leading fashion designers; access to a New York City apartment
for the year of her reign including living expenses and professional
representation by the Miss Universe Organization to further her
personal and professional goals.

Does she get any actual money or other thing of value? Everything on
the list sounds like a promotion for the giver, of little real benefit
to the winner.

If you want somebody who will draw a crowd, bring in Miss Teen South
Carolina USA, the one who finished second a few years ago. Teach her
to play chess, thereby proving that anybody can learn to play chess.

This might be a real idea.

Surely someone will volunteer to give her chess lessons and get her up
to 500 strength or so, which will make her strong enough to defeat
Allen Priest.

What is the rational reason to have Ms Teen USA at a chess
tournament?

It was proposed on the USCF Issues forum as a way to get more kids to
come.

I propose that people like Sloan, Roberts and "Forsythe" play in LESS
tournaments. That'd be a HUGE incentive for most rational people to
take up chess.

Did you see this:

She is really great. Better than every.

If we could get her to a chess tournament, it would be wonderful!!

There are a number of weird ideas to draw more people to a tournament,
with the Ms Teen USA I have to say this is the weirdest idea period.
The only connection with Ms Teen USA and with the tournament, they
both have young women in their teenage years. Just feel, that Ms Teen
USA or any other woman with a title like that is a marketable brand to
be associated with.
