One possible take on the Kirsan non-grata thing is that with the CAS
hearing due to start this week, the Russian Olympic organizers are
getting nervous about Kirsan fallout affecting their relationship with
the ICO as the Russian Olympics loom on the horizon.

"CAS"? Brian, for the sake of those who haven't followed this story
as closely, could you explain your acronyms?

And what is Ilyumzhinov's involvement with it?

FIDE, under it's own rules, has submitted itself to CAS regarding all
disputes involving chess. Karpov has gone to CAS asking that they
declare Kirsan's candidacy invalid and void. A hearing on the
submissions made by both sides is set for Wednesday and Thursday of this
week.
