Interesting results. Just one question: How did you do the test? I mean, did
you enter each move performed by each machine on the other one manually?
Then how would that affect the timing controls of the engines? Or is there a
way to directly connect the machines (serial? over the TCP/IP?) and do the
test automatically?

Most of the matches were carried out by Palm Hiarcs customers or
reviewers who also have other PDA chess software like Pocket Fritz 2,
Pocket Grandmaster, Chess Genius or Chess Tiger.

The games were played with the same time control on each machine by
entering moves into each machine as played (there is no auto play
interface between Pocket PCs and Palms). This is how testing is carried
out on dedicated chess computers and even how it used to be done by the
dedicated chess folks at the SSDF and Selective Search on PCs. Auto test
interfaces simplify the test procedure but somehow the chess played
never gets looked at, only the results which is a pity as the chess
played as in the Hiarcs-Fritz match was very good.

All matches played were supplied with game listings and these games were
checked for authenticity.

In all there is about 200 games played by Palm Hiarcs and its rating has
settled currently at 2604 Elo (on the SSDF scale), of course USCF Elo
would be somewhat higher.

The ratings are updated on http://www.hiarcs.com/phresults.htm

I am trying to keep the rating list up to date to reflect the most
accurate known figure for the chess strength of Palm Hiarcs.

The latest match totals against Pocket Fritz 2 stand at:
Palm Chess Hiarcs 9.41 32-18 Pocket Fritz2 (all played on 400Mhz
XScale processors)

As a point of reference the Hiarcs Palm chess engine is an advancement
on the Hiarcs 9 PC engine and is a step towards the Hiarcs 10 engine.

Best wishes,
Mark

Thanks for the complete answer. It seems to be a tough task to play hundreds
of games between two machines by manually entering the moves. Just one more
question: Any chance in the near future there will be a Hiarcs port for
Pocket PC?

That's good but at present there are more people interested in a PC and
even a Mac version.

You will probably see a Pocket Hiarcs in 2005 but in the meantime if you
want the best chess program in your pocket, I recommend Palm Chess
Hiarcs ;-).

best wishes,
Mark
