Default Kirsan Promises One Million Dollars to FIDE Trainers

Kirsan Promises One Million Dollars to FIDE Trainers

The FIDE Trainers Committee met on Sunday, September 26, 2010 at the
“Chess Academy” in Khanty-Mansiysk, Siberia, Russia. This was a free
day for the players.

The meeting was chaired by Grandmaster Adrian Mykhalchyshyn. Among
other things, he spoke of the need to translate and publish books in
English about how to train chess players. There are many good books
about training in German and Russian but none in English, so these
books need to be translated and published. Unfortunately, until now
there has been no money available for these projects, Grandmaster
Adrian Mykhalchyshyn said.

Later, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov arrived and addressed the
meeting. Kirsan stated that he would be providing one million dollars
to trainers to send them all over the world for training chess. These
funds would come from his own foundation which he would be providing
personally.

Kirsan also informed those present at the meeting that he has offered
to provide the City of New York with Ten Million Dollars to build a
chess academy near Ground Zero. This has been reported widely in
newspapers around the world in connection with the so-called “Ground
Zero Mosque” controversy. Kirsan said that this Chess Academy would be
similar to the Chess Academy in Khanty-Mansiysk in which this meeting
was being held. The building was completed on September 8, 2010.

Kirsan did not stand for questioning on these subjects. Instead, he
handed out awards and signed autographs. He handed out the Botvinnik
Award in recognition of the fact that Botvinnik had trained both
Karpov and Kasparov and he handed out the Boleslavsky award as
Bolesavsky too had been a great trainer. There were several other
awards, all named after famous trainers.

Zsuzsa Polgar was there at the meeting and she seemed to be expecting
to receive an award but she did not receive anything, although those
who had received awards invited her to join with them in a photo
opportunity.

Regarding the promise made by Kirsan to provide one million dollars of
his own personal money from his own foundation, this promise was
virtually word-for-word identical to a similar promise he had made at
the 1999 FIDE World Championship in Las Vegas and at the 2000 World
Chess Olympiad and FIDE Congress in Salonika, Greece and at numerous
other meetings. There is no proof that these earlier promises were
fulfilled. On the other hand, there is also no proof that they were
not fulfilled.

In short, Kisran has not changed the stump speech that he has been
delivering for at least the last eleven years.

-Personal- ... the world of top chess is sick, disgustingly so.
