Bobby Fischer loses deportation appeal in Japan

Last Updated Wed, 28 Jul 2004 05:16:31 EDT

TOKYO - Former world chess champ Bobby Fischer lost a match against
Japanese immigration officials late Tuesday when they refused to
reverse a decision to deport him to the United States.

* FROM JUL. 16, 2004: Japan detains chess wizard Bobby Fischer

The officials decided at the end of a two-day hearing that Narita
airport staff were right to detain Fischer two weeks ago for trying to
travel on an American passport that had been revoked.

Fischer has until Friday to appeal to the Japanese justice minister in
an effort to stay out of his home country, which wants to prosecute
him for playing a 1992 chess match in the former Yugoslavia while it
was under international sanctions.

The 61-year-old eccentric has been living in Asia ever since that
match against longtime foe Boris Spassky, in which he won about
$3-million U.S.

TOKYO - Former world chess champ Bobby Fischer lost a match against
Japanese immigration officials late Tuesday SNIP\.

All of a sudden, every journalist is a clever chess fan:

"Fischer ponders next move"
"Fischer's strangest endgame"
"Fischer's pathetic endgame"
"In a bizarre endgame, Bobby Fischer..."
"Fischer's legal chess match with the U.S. ends in arrest."
"Fischer a sacrificial pawn?"
"Fischer is a pawn in a game of election-year politics"
"Ex-Chess Champ Fischer Ponders Next Legal Move"
"Checkmate -- has chess king Bobby Fischer met his match?"
"Japan check-mates chess champion"
"For 12 years he has stayed one move ahead of the U.S. government..."
"In blunder, chess king is captured"

And my favorite (Two for the price of one!)
"Bobby Fischer gambit fails; exile enters endgame"

How about some creativity?

Most of the articles are covering the same material, but if you want to read
them, they can be easily found via http://news.google.com I just think all
the chess metaphor headlines are funny.

Hey journalists, lets see something new! I've got one...

"Japan nabs Fischer en passant"

Bobby's own words of his arrest at

http://home.att.ne.jp/moon/fischer/list/p_54/54_0.htm

He says "But all this is outweighed by one lying phone call and one
lying letter from the U.S. government. Irregardless of how this goes
Bobby says "**** you" to the corrupt and evil Japanese government and
Sayonara to Japan. Even if he lives and ever gets out of jail again
he will never return to Japan again until every U.S. military base in
Japan is closed and Japan is a free and independent country again."

And he wants political assylum there?
