CBC News: Chess champ Fischer applies for refugee status

Last Updated Tue, 03 Aug 2004 15:26:15 EDT

TOKYO - Former chess champion Bobby Fischer is trying to keep from
being deported to the U.S. by asking for refugee status in Japan, his
supporters said on Tuesday.

* FROM JULY 16, 2004: [27]Japan detains chess wizard Bobby Fischer

Fischer has been held in a deportation cell at Tokyo's Narita Airport
for three weeks. He was detained on July 13 and accused of travelling
with a revoked U.S. passport as he tried to board a flight to the

He filed for refugee status on Monday, said a statement issued by the
Committee to Free Bobby Fischer.

The United States wants Fischer because he played a chess match in the
former Yugoslavia in 1992, a violation of international sanctions in
place at the time.

Fischer's lawyer, Masako Suzuki, has also filed a new appeal to
Japan's justice minister to overturn his deportation, the statement

Suzuki has argued that "the political nature of the U.S. persecution
of Fischer makes him eligible for refugee status in Japan."

The statement suggests that with the refugee application in place,
Fischer can't be deported. Montenegro, where the 1992 match took
place, has offered to give him asylum if he asks.

Fischer's fame reached its peak in 1972 when he beat the Soviet
Union's Boris Spassky for the world championship in Reykjavik,

He was a recluse for years afterward, emerging in 1992 for a rematch
in Montenegro. Fischer beat Spassky again, collecting more than $3

Aside from being an erratic and reclusive figure, Fischer has been
known to court controversy, as well.

After the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, he told radio interviewers in the
Philippines that the United States should be "wiped out."

He has also described Jews as "thieving, lying *******s," even though
his own mother was Jewish.
