Hello,

I was wondering if chess programs that actually support endgame
databases do also show the distance-to-mate or distance-to-conversion
number of moves (if so, can you name a few?)

Basically when studying endgames, I would like to know whether a
particular move is good or bad immediately.

Giulio.

Many programs show distance to mate when using tablebases. Crafty,
for example, is one program that will show distance to mate. Other
strong free programs that will show distance to mate are Protector and
Critter (uses Gaviota tablebase format rather than Nalimov). Most
commercial programs (Rybka, Hiarcs, ZapChess) will also show distance
to mate. You can also visit the Nalimov tablebase server he

This will show the distance to mate (or draw status or even number of
moves to loss) for all possible moves from a position.
