2nd round of the US championship and it was a Burn French defense. Can
anyone comment on that game because it doesn't make any sense at all. I
know GM's have a bad game now and then but this was totally awful by
Akobian. With all the computers and technique these days this game came
out of the stone age. Naka got an extra rest day if you ask me.

No, it was a Rubinstein. The Burn is 3... Nf6 4. Bg5 dxe4.

Thanks. I always get that mixed up.

11...b6 seems reasonable. Black wanted an open file against white's king so he gave up a pawn on the queenside.

But later he allowed 20.Bd4. He might have thought that he could reply to this with 20...Rxd4, missing that after Nxd4 ...Qxd4 he would lose immediately to Bxh7+. After Bd4 black is in trouble.

They had mentioned that on the live website but it just reminded me of Aronian - Anand in the candidates tournament last year when Aronian said he got an innovation in the opening from a dream he
had the day before and barely survived. It just seemed like something he just made up at the board. However he is playing well again and just now in the other game Naka played a horrible move
against Wesley So. Wesley took advantage and Naka barely survived too. GM's though rare can play like a patzer on any given game on any given move.
