Barden: "This proved the low point of my chess career. It was the last round of the Olympiad qualifying group, and a win for White would put England into the final pool headed by the legendary Soviets. White is a pawn up, but my e5 pawn is doubly attacked and 1 Qe2?? allows Rxe5 2 Qxe5 Qxg2 mate. I could find no escape, went 1 f7+?? Qxf7 2 Qxf7+ Kxf7 3 Rf1+ Ke6 and resigned during the adjournment as the endgame is easily won for Black. [England lost 2-1] The watching England selectors were horrified, and I was banished from the national team for six years. How could White have won?"
