I think play in recent world championship matches has become too technical. Players are better than in the 1930s and shouldn't be given so much time to think.
Time control is currently "for full time control games, 40 moves in 100 minutes, then 50 extra minutes at move 40, and 15 extra minutes at move 60, with 30 seconds increment per move throughout. The player with the best score after 12 games is World Champion; if tied, players will play four rapid games." Or "for rapid games, 25 minutes with 10 seconds increment per move (3.7.1a).. The player with the best score after four games is World Champion; if tied, players will play up to five two-game blitz matches." I think this would be better: "For full time control games, 40 moves in 60 minutes, then 30 extra minutes at move 40, and 10 extra minutes at move 60, with 15 seconds increment per move throughout." But rapid games remain the same : 25 minutes with 10 seconds increment per move. |

It may be worth noting that the recent WC time limits ... Time control is currently "for full time control games, 40 moves in 100 minutes, then 50 extra minutes at move 40, and 15 extra minutes at move 60, with 30 seconds increment per move throughout. [...]" .... are almost identical to those used by [eg] 4NCL, which is played by players from GM down to roughly 1500 FIDE rating [the only difference is the extra 15 minutes]. In earlier times, WC matches were played at much more leisurely rates, inc adjournments, while other serious chess, such as tournaments and [in the UK] county matches, typically used much faster limits. The WC should be the pinnacle of chess, and the players should be given as much time as is compatible with a reasonable schedule. It should not be decided by 5-minute games, nor even by rapidplay. Hands up if you think the recent game 12 would have been a perfunctory draw if that would have meant the Champion retaining the title, as in the old days? -- Andy Walker, Nottingham. |

Since you've shown up, why don't you resolve the other thread and tell us which GM you think David Helfgott looks like. I think it will be some GM whom I've never seen. I don't think people often know what GMs looks like. Stop keeping everyone in suspense. Paul |

Magnus missed a win in several games in the full time control and karjakin missed a couple himself. As a matter of fact when players like these meet in a match their level of play drops because there is so much tension. Magnus even drew the last game because he wanted to take his chances in the rapid.
