Default Backgammon Tactics by Harold Thorne Review by Sam Sloan

The biggest advantage to backgammon is you have a chance to win. A
player can study chess for his entire life and still have no chance at
all, not even one chance in a million, to defeat a grandmaster at
chess. However, a player of only average ability would, after reading
and studying this book alone, have some chance to beat the World
Champion in a ten point match at backgammon.

Of course, that is because Backgammon includes an element of chance, with the
dice.

Some modern games are designed to offer an excellent balance between opportunities to exercise skill, and yet which give everyone a chance to win some of the time to keep it fun for everyone. The so-called "German" games such
as Settlers of Catan are what I am talking about.

Recently, I have been having fun with some friends playing the game Ticket to
Ride, which is also in this category.

But that is one kind of game - and Chess is another kind of game.
