Default New Releases of Classic Chess Books - Help Request

Does anyone know a retailer / publisher that is re-printing the old classic
chessbooks ? Authored by Ruy Lopez, Damiano etc..

I did some searches but cannot find anything.

Seems this would be a niche market for someone with the entrepreneurial
spirit

I don't know if this is specifically what you're looking for, but Dover
Books is a pretty good reprint house.

Here's a direct link to their chess books:

I don't know of anyone that does material that old. The market is
probably too small -- so any republishing would be on a very small scale
and be quite expensive. If there *is* such a publisher, the White collection
at Cleveland Public Library would almost certainly have copies -- that's
a good way of finding out: check their catalogues for old titles republished
after 1920 or so.

Olms Edition, Zürich, has printed lots of 19th and early 20th centry stuff --
about 100 years of Deutsche Schachzeitung, the Wiener Schachzeitung
of the Marco era, and after, and many tournament books. They seem to
have slowed down a bit -- or perhaps they've gone under? Their web site
www.edition-olms.com seems to have disappeared.

Moravian chess also reprints a lot of old material, but it several notches
below Olms in terms of quality -- it doesn't matter much for text, but for
pictures it's obvious. Still, for the old Chess Player's Chronicle,
the Fiske&Morphy Chess Monthly and much else it's the only alternative
available, except for the originals.

I know Batsford was doing at least some of these but it was 20 years ago.

What is the copyright on these old books, can anyone just reprint them
without permission now ??

Copyright is a right of the author (or designer) initially, and may then
be passed on to a publisher or someone else. Depending on where you are,
copyright is from 25 years after the death of the author/creator up to 120
years. 70 years is probably the most common period. (For material without
a definite author -- like old chess magazines -- the period is usually
counted from the date of publication.)

But there are oodles of special cases to be aware of -- translations
have both the original copyright, and that of the translation, and
well 'designed' books can very well have a copyright on their 'look'.
If you decide to publish, you take on the legal responsibilities of
a publisher -- ask a copyright lawyer before you take too large risks.

There are some old problem books on my web site: they're all
by authors who died more than 75 years ago. I know of people who
do much the same thing, but work with scanned images, instead of resetting
the full book (but typically ensure that OCR'd text is available, so that
it is possible to make searches in the text.)

See http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/okbooks.html for more details
about copyright questions -- as well for one of the best on-line indexes of
on-line e-texts on just about any subject.
