Default The next big Phenom?

In the past year, Hikaru Nakamura has gained quite the following in
the US, as the best prospect for high-level success in the chess
circuit. However, Fabiano Caruana has just achieved an IM norm. Caruana
is only 12 years of age, which is IIRC how old Nakamura was when he
achieved his first IM norm, at the Norm Factory event in Budapest. He
scored +7, and beat a couple of IMs--good enough for a Performance
Rating of 2487. Pretty impressive for a player rated only 2255 to
maintain over 13 rounds. Obviously, he is significantly underrated. I
believe that he is from New York, so I would not think that there is a
dearth of events where Caruana could play FIDE rated games. But,
clearly he is in Budapest for a reason.....

I wonder if Chandra Hawsa Koneru [IND 230] is any relation to GM
Humpy Koneru, who also played in the First Saturday event, but in the
GM Tournament?

Chandra is the younger sister of Humpy Koneru. Fabiano used to live in
NY. He is a very nice boy. His family moved to Europe some months ago
to give him more opportunities to play in serious competition. G/30 at
the Marshall just doesn't cut it.

Fabiano is a great kid and a phenomenal talent.

Not to take anything away from him, what is the point of an IM with a FIDE
rating of 2275? I tend to think of IMs as out of my striking range (assuming
I'm really lucky and they're playing badly). A 2275 rating is definitely
within my striking range.

In my opinion players with serious international aspirations should stay
away from the title mills. Becoming an IM through results in decent
tournaments that include very strong players is one thing. Getting the title
by slaughtering a field of over-rated, over-titled has-beens and second-rate
title mill graduates is meaningless to me.

Angelo,

I had always thought of the Hungarian tournaments as title mills, but
actually Tim Taylor's now-notorious article in CL made me reconsider.
Taylor gives more than one example of a tournament in which the
competition was ferocious and in the end _nobody_ got his desired norm.

It remains true, of course, that there are so many tournaments in
Budapest that the easiest way to get a norm is to spend a few months
there. But actually doing it is apparently no piece of cake. In the
light of Taylor's report, I'm inclined to give Caruana a lot of credit
for achieving an IM norm on what may have been his first Hungarian try.

Larry,

You're mostly right. It's amazing that such a little kid could be so good.
But not all Hungarian tournaments are created equal. I don't believe that
opponent ratings among a field of unknowns are that reliable. Plus, there's
a reason why Fabiano is still rated just 2275.

I hope I'm totally wrong about this, and that he's simply gotten much
stronger since his last rating was posted. Even so, I wish he would obtain
his norms in real tournaments.

As for Taylor, the guy is 51, his FIDE rating is 2297 and he hasn't played
in a legit international tournament for as far back as I can remember. He
wants to be a GM? Well then, dagnabbit, so do I.

While we're on the subject of Tim Taylor, many younger players are
probably unaware of the fact that in his prime (the early 80s if I
recall) he was not just a skin-of-the-teeth IM, he really was easily
strong enough to deserve the title. When he was properly booked up, he
was especially deadly on the White side of 1. d4 systems, with which he
scored quite a few impressive knockouts. He also wrote a couple of
pretty good tournament books and monographs on opening theory.

I see that he played in the HB tournament and finished with a
respectable 6-3, scoring 2-2 against his GM opponents.

I remember when my son was in about 3rd grade and played "the next
Bobby Fischer" Fabiano Caruana in a National Scholastic Tournament. He
was thrilled to get a draw when Fabiano blundered and hung a bishop.
TV cameras from NY were there to follow Fabiano to what they were sure
was going to be a National Scholastic Championship, but the
championship was not to be that year. If anyone has ever seen the
video, all you can see of my son is his bright orange hair, with a buzz
cut, from behind. It's all baseball, all the time now though with both
PONY allstars and American Legion summer ball about to start.

As for Taylor, the guy is 51, his FIDE rating is 2297 and he hasn't played
in a legit international tournament for as far back as I can remember. He
wants to be a GM? Well then, dagnabbit, so do I.

Sounds like me! I am also 51, and my Fide rating was about that or a bit
more, 25 years ago. These days I am proly only 900-1000ish.

What chance for us ancient patzers to become any sort of phenom? Sad, no?
May everyone weep.

Ecce, Phil
