Default Will US ever pardon Bobby Fischer?

Just wondering. What are the odds of the US ever pardoning him, maybe
after Bush leaves? I don't think its good as a chess player to have one of
the greatest chessplayers ever ostracized by his own country, not after he's
contributed so much to the game.

I believe Bobby Fischer may have been exhibiting some sort of mental
disorder, possibly a schizotypal personality disorder. Not really
schizophrenia, but exhibiting some aspects thereof. He also had a personal
sense of betrayal by the Armstrong World Church of God, usually considered a
religious cult by many groups, and also perhaps a bit of ingrained
self-hating anti-semitism against his half-Jewish lineage and because of the
religious assosciations with the Armstrong "church" (IMO, he had a right to
petition the Encyclopedia Judaica and not list him as Jewish, even though
that led to an accusation that he was anti-Semitic, which in turn fed his
paranoia. Harrison Ford also has a Jewish mother, but he doesn't consider
himself Jewish either).

Zero. More to the point, pardon him for what? Violation of trade
restrictions with Yugoslavia, or twenty-odd years of tax evasion? Besides,
having held loudly-expressed political views for forty years that place
him way to the right of even most lunatic white-supremicist survivalist
groups, Fischer is (if possible) even more an anathema to the left than he
is for the current Republican administration. Who is there who would
bother to pardon him whether or not Bush or the Republicans are in power?

The best the chess world should hope for is that Fischer lives quietly for
the rest of his days in Iceland, passes at the appropriate time in the
fullness of years without making himself heard from again, and that the
term "Fischer" as soon as possible comes to refer only to the
corpus of the 700-odd games (plus exhibitions) played between 1956 and
1992. The games have left a positive legacy for US and world chess, but
the legacy of the man himself apart from those games is overwhelmingly
negative.

What about the Fischer clock? Or the Fischer Random Chess/Shuffle
Chess/960 variant? Whatever you think about the stuff this guy has said,
the guy is a genius. Maybe genius tainted with a big dose of madness, but
he's still a genius.

I just don't understand why we should loath Bobby Fischer. Sure, he said
some stupid things, but so did Henry Ford. And yet Henry Ford also did alot
of good for many people, and later he repudiated the anti-semitic and
pro-Nazi remarks he made . Fischer is not dead yet, maybe there is still
hope for him. It's one thing if he not only said bad things about the US or
Jews, but so far its just been talk. I haven't heard that he funneled money
to Osama bin Laden or is running a secret death camp for the "Final Solution
2.0" in Rekjavik. Certainly can't people take the stuff he's done with a
little compassion for a guy that's obviously not running on all fours
emotionally? Especially the non-chess-playing Americans, they just loath
the guy. And who, knows, there might be some kernel of truth to his
paranoia, it turns out the FBI had a stack of files on the Fischer family
because his mother was ex-Soviet and his biological father was working on
the Manhattan project. It's not such a stretch to start seeing radio
transmissions in your fillings and the government hounding you if you grow
up with that sort of thing.

Genius doesn't excuse him from his childish dogmatic behavior. He is
one sick SOB.

It always cracks me up to watch chessplayers label Booby Fissure as a
"genius." Sure, the man can play a mean game of chess, but other than that,
what qualifies him as a "genius?" He's good at a game -- to some, the best
to ever play it -- but that's it. I don't hear people calling Tiger Woods
or Michael Jordan geniuses, and those two are/were arguably the best to play
their games. So, since their achievements have matched -- nay,
*surpassed* -- Fischer's in their own respective fields, why don't they
qualify? Or do they?

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Other than his home runs, what distinguished Babe Ruth?

"Genius" usually means a person having some kind of mental powers or
mental skill beyond normal, or displaying brilliance in some particular
activity. Tiger Woods, while being no idiot, seems to possese mostly the
ability to hit a ball a long ways accurately. The mark of alot of talent
and skill, but genius? I don't think so.

Besides, Fischer has made contributions like openings, the Fischer chess
clock, and even the Fischer Random Chess is slowly getting adherents.

Yes, of course he's deeply disturbed/nasty and full of alot of misplaced
bitterness and rage, which means he's hardly a poster boy. Every sport or
hobby seems to have their bad boys that are exceptional, not always in a
positive manner. However, its sort of puzzling when people say Garry
Kasparov is such a poor sport, especially in the broader public eye after
his "defeat" to Deep Blue. Compared to Bobby Fischer, Garry Kasparov is
Mother Theresa and much more benefitting the image of chess.

Chess clocks with incrementation was invented by Bronstein. Random/shuffle
chess was invented several centuries ago.

Herr Fischer chickened out in 1975 when he saw younger generation of chess
players and left chess so there`s nth to discuss here instead of his ravings
