Victim: 'He Kidnapped, Beat And Raped Me!'
Richard Crespo, The 'Ragin Cajun,' Arrested
Following San Antonio Police SWAT Stand Off;
RG Griffing, SAL Commentary

He calls himself the "Ragin' Cajun."
He is being held under heavy bond on a variety of felony charges stemming
from what appears to be a "stalking attack" on a San Antonio woman.

Though it appears the 42-year-old man, a well-known chess figure in
Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas, made careful, detailed preperations for
the attack, in the end he picked all the wrong moves.

Now, some investigators are wondering if it was his first such crime.

The San
* * * Antonio woman -- name withheld by the Lightning -- was snatched by her
abductor at work Thursday morning in NW San antonio. She was held in a motel
room on 410, where she says she was beaten and sexually assaulted during the
19 hour standoff.

The SA SWAT team finally convinced the man to release the hostage. Then,
early Friday, they flushed him from the room with tear gas, and took his
gun. (Click for background.)

KSAT TV reported Friday night that the woman's family denies Express News'
reports that indicate the victim first met the man at a bar in Corpus
Christi. The woman is married, and a mother.

Crespo admitted the abduction, but told police that he didn't want to harm
the woman, whom he had met in a chess chatroom on the Internet, and that he
simply wanted to talk to her, according to KSAT.

Police spokesman Gabe Treviño told reporters that in addition to renting a
room at the Econo Lodge hotel at Loop 410 and Ingram Road, where he held the
woman, he had also booked a room at a nearby Red Roof Inn, where police
found a Nissan pickup with Mississippi license plates in the parking lot.

An employee at Red Roof Inn told KSAT that Crespo had rented rooms there in
the past.

The Lightning has learned that Crespo runs numerous chess internet sites,
and had split his time between New Orleans and Ocean Springs, Mississippi --
92 miles away --were he frequently boarded with family members.
Crespo also travelled extensively through the South for his chess business,
visiting and setting up tournaments.

It is likely that he first met his victim at a chess tournament in Houston.

Since then Crespo has sent numerous bouquets of flowers to the woman's work
place. His attentions were not welcomed.

The Lightning has also learned that police in Texas, Louisiana and
Mississippi are now checking cold cases for similarities to the San Antonio
attack, particularly along I-10.

More to follow.
