MAD BOBBY'S IDEAS AREN'T ALL CRAZY
By ANDY SOLTIS

October 21, 2007 -- CHESS

IT'S crazy, but as Bobby Fischer's behavior became more and more
bizarre, his chess ideas seem more sane.

Fischer's revolutionary chess clock, which adds increments of time to
prevent time-trouble blunders, once seemed like a crackpot scheme. Now
it's widely used.

Fischerandom chess, in which the placement of first-rank pieces is
selected randomly before each game, is now treated with respect from the
world's top players.

At a recent tournament in Mainz, Germany, they compared Fischer's rules
with the traditional ones.

"It's a very tough game," GM Vilorel Bologan told "64" magazine. "One
slight error in the first moves can cost the whole game."

Fischer's chess wipes out the advantage of opening theory that players
study exhaustively. In contrast, the most difficult moves of the game is
often the first two or three. As the position becomes more like "normal
chess," it's easier to find good moves, GMs said.

Before each game, the players are given five minutes to acquaint
themselves with what may be a very strange-looking position.

Alexander Grischuk said there was a particular talent you need to do
well. "It's important not to be late" for those five minutes.
